CPF vs BLF

Is it my imagination or did BLF overtake CPF? CPF used to get hundreds of new posts per day. Now it seems like the same old repetitive stuff. BLF is SO MUCH BETTER.

CPF was nice place 15 years ago.
Now I barely read it.

Flashaholics are like puppies. Born blind, and then their eyes open.

You are a flashaholic if you are forced to come out of the closet, to make room for more flashlights.

I lost interest in CPF in about 1.5 decades ago. I surf there every 5-6 years.

I miss the CPF get togethers and night hikes though. That aspect of CPF has not been carried over to here… I don’t think. The last CPF get together I attended was ~10 years ago and hosted by the darksucks/Prometheus dudes machine shop in mountain view. That was fun, volunteering to drop-impact test his $300+ lights for him. He gave me one of his 18650 backup cell carry cases, which I still use today.

The modamag dude also hosted some really fun GTGs. I still have an old ROP (Rise of the Pelican) build from those early incan days, and a C mag that we bored on his lathe that night.

BLF has much better oriented forum system. At the opening page you can see every recent topics that have new posts. So much easier to find what’s interested and new.

CPF has a few fun activities (for example, the weekly challenges have been brought back) and I noticed people tend to talk more about their use of lights than their actual specs and technical terms and the whole torch development system that we have here on BLF.

Aside from its historical archive, these are some of very few things that keep my attention in CPF.

Yeah, and cpf has the “soup nazi” as the forum mod/owner.

I initially signed up on CPF years ago, and the reason was a friend referred me to that place. What initially was a good place to hang out, it became so political (forum politics, not actual politics) and they started to ban so many people
then I google flashlight forum and found BLF. The users on BLF are much friendlier.

reddit has grown so much in recent years and they are now the biggest forum in my other hobbies. they have the ability to win over people.

I haven’t stopped by there for years. Can’t even remember my password.
I can get my full ration of aggravation just watching TV.

Reddit is alright in some respects, but it’s predominantly kids who follow fads. One kid buys an Olight, and there’s a mad rush for Olights. Another kid buys a light from Intl-Outdoors, and all you see over there is “Hank lights”.

I guess I’m not enough of a tribal ‘follower’ to get much out of Reddit. BLF feels better, at least folks here seem to form their own considered opinions and express them respectfully and intelligently.

The two things I did not like about CPF:

The moderators were on some power trip. If you posted in the wrong group you were publicly shamed.

And

The light brand discussions were snobbish. If it wasn’t Surefire or HDS Systems, it was garbage.

Well we all know the outcome of that.

The BLF members are so nice, I mean it.

Not this again, this usually never ends well.

There is no “vs”

They are 2 separate flashlight sites.

I like both. Don’t find them snobbish. Sometimes I like to play with higher end stuff and sometimes I like the budget stuff.

Reddit interface is not good, but they seem to be much more open to discussion and tech stuff.  I think they are slowly taking over now.

Reddit is like Olight Facebook group. They will never get that tech level as BLF.

Simple discussion and maybe more deep but only between few guys.

BLF is Oracle

use whichever sites you find useful

recently CPF passed BLF, after being behind

I noticed the moderators at CPF had stopped posting so much
they stopped enforcing some of the rules, such as posting links, mentioning blf, talking about where to buy..

here is an example of the top 5 threads a few moments ago.. maybe that will give some perspective on the different personalities of each board

CPF, imo most hostile moderation, the main reason I left for BLF:

BLF, imo very flashlight modding friendly, very little moderation, lots of leeway about posting links and info that CPF forbids:

Reddit, I know little, have not gotten comfortable enough w the UI to participate

The problem with CPF is it was bought by someone who wanted to use it to earn profits from advertisers, so after that it was never a real forum and was geared towards giving positive testimonials for certain companies.
BLF has been an oasis of minimal moderation although I notice that seems to have changed since the lockdowns began.

Maybe sb is getting older and grumpier Big Smile
But I fear the real reason is that the pandemic has caused more issues that needed moderation.

I think sb is becoming more grumpy.  He'll lock a thread faster than the speed of light

I’m pretty new here, and only joined CPF in November, but have lurked both sites for years. My observation of BLF is that of a much more laid back and inviting atmosphere. Regardless of an individual’s knowledge level, seasoned posters here seem to be far more willing to share their experience and opinions without alot of judgment or egotistical background noise.
Being new, I couldn’t even name a moderator here, and don’t recollect having seen a thread where one has had to ‘step in’. The crowd here is pretty good about self-policing.

Have you seen r/flashlights lately? It’s pretty much just memes that get upvoted, also anything that is not a flashlight from Hank just gets ignored.

Wink Me being an old grump notwithstanding, I’ve always stepped in when people start to argue in an unfriendly way about anything. It’s pretty obvious that people are more touchy and uptight since the pandemic started, and that’s understandable. But that has led to more blatant rule violations, and so to prevent users from getting more aggravated and eventually banned it’s best for me to step in more quickly when any given topic starts going south or is likely to do so soon.

Is that a bad thing? By creating an account here and continuing to use it you agree to adhere to the BLF Rules, which are enforced. Think about the alternatives: 1) a wild free-for-all with everyone getting mad and making this place miserable for themselves and everyone else, or 2) many moderators that all “lock threads faster than the speed of light”, but each with their own biases and criteria applied inequitably to different users.

Reminds me of a parable about an old man in a small town, and one day a traveler who was considering moving there asked him “What are the people like here?” and the old man replied “Well let me ask you first what’s it like in the town you come from?” The traveler replied: “Oh it’s a really nice place, everyone is friendly and generous.” The old man replied: “Here it’s just the same, you’ll get on really well if you move here.” Later a different traveler asked the old man the same thing, and he got the same question back, to which the second traveler replied: “Ugh it’s unbearable where I come from, everyone is mean and stingy, that’s why I’m looking for somewhere else to move to.” The old man replied: “Well imagine that, you’ll find that people here are just the same, better keep looking elsewhere.”

Lou Minescence wrote:

Users can delete their own posts, as long as it’s not the first post that starts a thread. They can also report spam and the spammer’s post could get automatically deleted and possibly the account could be automatically blocked, all according to a fairly nuanced algorithm. Users can also report posts that violate the BLF Rules, and according to a different algorithm the post could be removed.

Please don’t let this thread turn into a CPF bashing thread. Thanks in advance.

And as for Reddit… this isn’t a rule, but it is an observation based on fact— Reddit stinks. And we all need to continue to work hard to prevent BLF from becoming a toxic cesspool like Reddit.

I was mostly referring to the free speech thread where everyone was civil and then you just shut it down for some reason.  I guess civil free speech is controversial as well now, but I also understand this is a flashlight forum and you really want to keep it that way, so alls well that ends well.
