Has anybody modded one of these with an osram led? It was one of the first lights I modded after maglites many moons ago. I always liked the throw for a single AA light and wondered how they would be with a new throwy led running a 14500.
As I recall the switch did not hold up with higher current .
I modded one with a Nichia 219B and it remains a favorite .
I’d have thought low runtimes.
Depending which Osram LED you’d want to be driving it at 5 or 8amps to get it to perform. I’m not even sure if a 14500 would support this amp draw and if it can it would be for a very short time.
The LED might still work well and give a good beam profile. But lumen output will be low if you can’t get sufficient power.
Isn’t the RC-G2 reflector designed for an XRE emitter? I didn’t think you could properly focus an XP/XM/XH emitter in an XRE reflector…???
Someone please correct me. thanks
It is a matter of emitter height, an XR-E reflector does not have a special shape or anything, I got them working with other leds also. My RC-G2 has another led too, can’t find it now and I forgot how I modded it. But to be honest, since the Lumintop GT-micro (better host, better performance) it has become less attractive although I still like the design of the RC-G2.!
Thanks for the replies. I did wonder about the reflector with a flat white, I might look at other options of led but think I’ll shelf this idea for justnow, it probably not worth the effort when there are better lights and hosts out there.
I think you might be surprised how well some old lights respond to a simple mod .
