Xpl-hi 4000k OR sst20 4000k

I’ve got my next KR4 narrowed down to this, I have multiple lights with the sst20 4000k but nothing with the xpl 4000k.

How is the tint in the xpl? As good? Is it high cri?

Is the output of the xpl 4000k still high lumen like the 5000k or is it lower like in the case of the sst20 5000k and 4000k (average drop in lumens seems to be about 25%ish).

It’s low CRI (~75) unless stated otherwise, that’s why it produces more lumens. It may even have negative R9 (the part of CRI responsible for red color).

I have lights with XP-L HI 4000K and SST-20 4000K , and XP-L HI wins for me. As Jack Kellar said, the greenish tint in the SST-20s is quite That also happens in the 5000Ks, which only loose the greenish and become rosy when the light is beeing used in higher amps! My Fireflies ROT66 Gen II has 5000K SST-20s and only when reaching the top of the ramping it gets “white”. That doesn’t happen with XP-L HI 5000K, which is almost pure white!

Adding that the XP-L HI is not High-CRI. But it is not a bad one!

Question, did you have to modify a carclo 10621 optic with the xpl-hi ? I see mtn E sells a modified one I didn’t know if it’s necessary

I’m a big fan of the XP-L Hi 5D, use them in the RRT01 and even ordered the Noctigon KR1 with this LED. Much nicer tint than SST20.

Hum, I guess you don’t need to modify the optic, but I don’t have teh KR4, so I can’t be sure.
But as the XP-L HI is “flat” I guess it will not interfere with the optic, if that is what concerns you

If you plan on using your light on higher modes more regularly, I’d go SST20 4000K and the color rendering will be amazing, with very similar throw to the XP-L Hi.

If you plan on using your light frequently in lower modes, the SST20 4000K will turn more green, so the XP-L Hi will be the better option.

As for overall output, our eyes are very sensitive and will dilate according to the scene. A +20% increase in brightness you get with lower CRI LED’s is not very noticeable to start with, and once your eyes are given the chance to adjust to the scene, makes even less of a difference.
On the other hand, you can’t make up for poor color rendering. The SST20 will be superior, and everything will appear more saturated, vibrant, and you will get a sense of increased clarity over a low CRI option.

Thing is - compared to high CRI emitters all low CRI LEDs from Cree look green on all modes.

Hey, no problem! I didn’t even remember of the XP-L HD, but yes, with those leds the optics need to be modified, as the dome is quite large and will be pressed too much!
I have a triple XP-L HI (5000K) and had no problems with the optic so far

I’ve read this multiple times now but I cannot confirm it. I never had problems fitting any XP-L2 into any 106xx, the optics go on and off without any resistance.
