Excellent idea!

Does it come with the right bolt for the tripod mount, or did you add that separately?

ANSWER:

  • No, I added a shorter 1/4” bolt with a flat head and reused the special washer provided. .
  • These bolts are readily available at any hardware store (Flat Head Square Drive Stove Bolts) and can be easily cut to length with a hacksaw. Only flat head bolts will work.
  • The bolt it comes with may be too long and might have a finer thread.
  • 1/4X20 it’s what you want for camera equipment.

I bought a VERY powerful neodymium magnet with an LT1 lantern from another member here last week. He found this magnet with very close to the same diameter as the LT1, a 1/4” hole already cut in it and about 3/16” thick. I cut down a cap screw to fit the magnet’s hole (beveled on one side for a countersink). It came out really nice! But it is SO strong it would easily scratch a lot of nicer metal surfaces I’d place it on.

After looking over your pics above, I started thinking I might be able to get this magnet under a rubber disk similar to yours above. I love your ingenuity using a simple rubber part that will probably last for 50 years here! I think I found some that are flat enough on top, but have some recess underneath where this magnet from hell might fit under the rubber disk, and so be flush with the magnet (maybe with some razor work for a good fit). Then try with felt or something on the bottom. This way the magnet can’t scratch surfaces.

So if I can pull this off, I’d have a lantern that won’t fall over, and that sticks to metal without scratching it. I’ll post my results here.

I also asked the BLFer I got this magnet from where he got it. He sent a link to Amazon to a $30 magnet, but hinted he got his out of China. Anyway, as you are doing all these great mods I thought I’d mention the magnet idea and thank you for THIS idea! :+1:

I got the 66mm diameter version.
Seems just the right strength, not too strong to damage, rubber coated is excellent - should last forever. I wonder if the 88mm version would be better?

I am finding uses for the 360 degree, pivoting small ball head that was included.

I do keep the 5” rubber disk on most of the time… there something about it that just suits how I use the lantern.

Thanks for your post, I was going to order a red one.

However I am not sure if the 1/4” x20 will fit into the sander, as they appear to be metric only.

I suppose they could be tapped to the standard tripod thread.

Maybe I’ll order one to try, the price is good.
