AAAA NiMh rechargeable

Looking for more reliable experience or information.
Yes FOUR AAAA. I have a potential use for a couple of them. I dislike alka-leaks.
Does anyone have any experience? Amazon and eBay have a few. Reviews are all over the place. Frequent complaints about leaking, or poor performance. OTOH, I would not be the least surprised if they were being charged at 500mA and possibly lots higher. I suspect battery abuse, and the typical lack of understanding rechargeable batteries.
Near as I can tell most of them claim 400mAh, but more likely they are really in the 300-350mAh range. So that level of charging is simply too high.
The last BLF thread I could find on this was a loooooog time ago (2012-2014).

I got some AAAA NiMh cells from that online A source the other day: A 4-pack of EBL and a 4-pack of Pickle Power.

The Pickle Power are rated at 500 mAh, but my Opus BT C3400 V3.1 shows them as 347, 350, 364, 374 (accuracy debatable, but probably a useful approximation), which I would consider acceptable for “400 mAh” cells, but not for “500 mAh.” (And yes, the 3400 does show cells higher than rated sometimes.)

The set of EBL AAAAs rated at 400 mAh tested at 341, 345, 345, 353, with moderately higher IRs and significantly lower metered brightness readings compared to the Pickle Powers, if only mildly noticeable visually.

I found it interesting that the comparing metered brightnesses with the PP NiMhs at various voltages to alkalines at various voltages suggested that the PPs provided almost as much brightness out the front as the alkalines for voltages respectively corresponding to early discharge (after the 1.6 V to 1.5 V drop), and more brightness for later. This was using a ThorFire TS4A and a Streamlight Stylus, with a Sinometer LX1330B (which is presumably the same as umpteen other identical-looking LX1330B brandings). Obviously this was pretty ad hoc and sloppy, small sample size, more hand-waving than rigor, YMMV, etc., but still …

This also pretty much showroom floor, not lifetime experience. But the PP mAh are scattered from 69% to 75% of rated, while the EBLs are more clustered from 85% to 88% of rated. Weights were all in the 6.5g-6.9g range, with the EBLs again a bit more tightly clustered (and lower average, which surprised me). I have some EBL Li-Ions that are a few years old and holding up well, albeit with light usage, and had never seen a Pickle Power until I was shopping for these. So overall, my lifetime expectations from the EBLs is probably higher than for the PPs, even if the PPs look better initially. In fact, my rotation is starting with the EBLs in use, and I will probably end up with the PPs not being left in the flashlights for any lengthy periods. The ThorFire, which I like, may be irreplaceable, and the Streamlight isn’t all that cheap. Ask me again in a few years.

I ended up getting ANVOW Rechargeable AAAA Batteries Ni-MH 1.2V 400mAh from Amzon; $7 for 2.
I have pretty good/reliable dedicated discharger. After a few cycles I was getting ~ 340MAh/0.3A draw. No real difference 0.2A. IR measured with it was 55, which I think is not bad for a AAAA. I have old AA that show 10x that IR.
I’ve run one through a single use cycle in a mini tooth polisher. Works fine and lasted 6 weeks with occasional use. Power good right up to the end.
For now I’m satisfied.

Some of the reviews for EBL were not too encouraging. Average battery users don’t have a clue, so it’s hard to tell.

I passed over ANVOW because Amz only had 2-packs, and I wanted the 3-cell Streamlight to have cells from the same lot. I will keep trying. Getting more AAAA niMhs gives me an excuse to get another Streamlight Stylus. :disguised_face:

Looking at the Pickle Power listing again, while tidying up my review for Amz (part of which I cut and pasted for my previous comment here), I noticed something about “DBCK steel” and googled that term to see what it meant - lo and behold, almost all the google hits were for EBL battery descriptions. So I go back to the EBL AAAA page, and find that “eco-friendly cell, doesn’t contain Hg/Cd/Pb, makes no pollution to the environment, and using DBCK steel shell which can protect the battery against explosion due to overpressure.” is identical on both the PP and EBL pages. All indications are that PP cut and pasted various parts of their whole description from EBL, or they both copied from the same place. Maybe PP sources their cells from EBL (maybe I was just lucky to get a batch from them that was a little better than the batch from EBL), maybe they both get them from the same Chinese factory, maybe PP just cribbed.

I also looked at Queentona. None of the reviews mention the actual cell performance, beyond “worked,” or whether they fit this or that. The 300 mAh rating made me wonder whether this was greater honesty or lower capacity. The option selection (with or without wrappers), description, and reviews suggest that the seller is using a thicker than usual wrapper. I guess I should ask some questions.

I’d be surprised if there was more than one or two actual different AAAA NiMh cells out there, in terms of who actually made them. The demand is super low, but I did have availability for them back when I had access to bare NiCd/NiMh cell ordering at the commercial level.

I’m going to have to try the ebl’s, since my son took the anvow’s for his digital pen. I got them 2 weeks ago and he hasn’t recharged the first one yet. Wondering which one of my 20 chargers will work with them

Those look like flat tops, which would limit their applications, unless you want to slap 3mmx2mm magnets on them.

There are some interesting 300mAh flat tops on eBay [ 8 Pcs Rechargeable Ni-MH AAAA Battery 300mAh 1.2V Flat tops | eBay ], but if they are really the specified 8.45mm diameter, they aren’t going to fit down stylus tubes, whether penlight or surface, without peeling off the wrappers. Also, the length is short for AAAA, more like the almost-AAAA found inside many 9v batteries.

Thanks for all the good info. Thanks to this thread I finally pulled the trigger on a Streamlight Stylus. Tint was purple but I have a stash of some fancy tint, higher CRI 5mm emitters from back in the CPF days, swapped one in and the tint and beam profile improved greatly! I harvested some AAAA from an Energizer Max 9v to hold me over til I get some ni-mh.
Swap was pretty easy, just take off the end, remove batteries, and push down the emitter on the desk to get it started. Then use a long tool to push it out the rest of the way.
Used the resistor that was on there, I guess you could vary it if you wanted to change the output. Trim new emitter to match the old, solder on the resistor, bend the negative wire a little, and put it back in.
There’s a tiny piece of something inside of the emitter base that will be easy to lose, so keep an eye on it.
If you’re going to using non-standard batteries now would be the time to maybe solder a little blob on the end of the positive wire so you don’t have to use magnets or whatever with the cells that have reverse polarity.
OR, if you’re all-in on using reversed batteries, you could go ahead and reverse the polarity of the emitter so it only works with the backwards batteries.

It has bugged me that Streamlight Stylus penlights can be had in several colors of LED, all with black barrels, or in several colors of barrels, all with white LED. I was sure if I dug around, I’d find out how to switch innards so LED color and body color went together, even if I ended up with too many black barrel+white LED.

And then here comes the answer in a thread I follow, before I even got beyond the pondering stage.

Just came back to post that the cells from the Energizer Max work fine without anything at the positive end but did require a tiny ~5x1.5mm magnet between 2 of the cells to get the group long enough to make contact.
Have fun modding! It seems like I’ve seen some color cycling versions of 5mm emitters, may have to make a Party Stylus.
