Review: Solarforce P1

Thanks for the tip.......

I finally found a niche for my P1, it is now my "pool" light. It seems to be waterproof enough for this use, and I put a cheap one mode drop in it so that if it does leak I'm not S.O.L.

Anyone got pics with clip?

I just received three P1s in the mail. Every color except black.

Just a heads up about the brown color. It is about twice as brown as their website would lead you to beleive. Sort of the color of well done steak. It is very brown. So much so that it is much closer to the green P1 than say the tan color on a Surefire G2N. Almost couldn't tell them apart when they were still in their original plastic packaging. My heart sank a little when I thought I had two greens. It's much darker than any coyote or FDE nylon I have.

I have some pictures and when my wife has time she will hopefully help me upload them.

Not disappointed, mind you, it's still pretty cool. I just though I'd give a heads up incase anybody was thinking about getting one in that color. Always better to be fully informed, right?

Thanks once again Foy for a fun review.

I have a question for anyone with a P1. What is the body diameter? I assume that it is wider than the standard L2 / 6P. Only reason I ask is because I currently use a Blackhawk Mod-U-Lok holster designed for 1" diameter bodies and want to confirm if the holster will work with the P1.

My guess is the the diameter is over 1". But only a guess.

Aleve, if I haven't said it before, welcome to BLF. I just ran upstairs and grabbed a P1. The body is 1 1/8". Near as I can tell, anyway. Just to double check the size difference, I put the P1 tail cap on an L2 and it is noticeably wider. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

CheapThrills, I tried putting the SF clip one two of my samples and it doesn't fit. I would assume that will be the case on all of them. So if the inability to have a clip is a deal breaker you'll be P1less it seems.

Not for nothing, I just realized that this might be the only thread I helped get back on topic after participating in a derailment. Let's hope that's not a trend! :p

Darn no clip usage, in which i had a spare....you can always use a NiteIze holster to keep the light in place.

Cone ... Thanks for checking. Its as I expected. At least its a reason for me to not buy the P1.

I'll probably end up buying one eventually, but I'll hold off for a super sale.

Thanks for checking.

At my work, clip helps quite a lot... Too bad it cannot tale it...

OTOH: the two-way clip could perhaps fit?? :)

I did see a pic on cpf of a yellow P1 with a SF clip installed. I'm not sure how since my green-tan one will not accept the clip.

It's at least possible if you open the inside of the clip some.

A clip would be nice; but ever since I badly bent a SF clip when I entered my car with the torch still on my hip, I have lost some of my faith in them. For a P1, I'd probably sew myself another loop-type belt holster from unused laptop pouch carrying slings. I'd like to make one from seatbelt webbing, as well; sometime. So far, the one I've (painstakingly) sewn myself has held up 365 days of service until today, so far - no signs of wear, even. I do like loop holsters.

BTT, if the P1 was just a wee bit cheaper, came in "signal-orange" colour, and with a (probably faked, but who cares about that anyway) ATEX IIC certification (Ex-symbol cast in the body), I know I'd buy some as gifts for at least two firemen I know.

update:

I have tried - I really have.

I put my best UF module in this guy and used it at work, exclusively, for two weeks. I just don't like it. I don't like how it feels in the hand, I hate its balance and I simply can not get past how ugly it is. Also; my particular light exibits strange switch behavior. It doesn't always change modes well (stays in a mode despite several soft presses) and a drop-in change does not eliminate the problem.

I can report that a hard landing on asphalt following as vigorous a launch as Foy could muster, causes no change in performance and almost no change in apperance. The latter of which could never be said about an L2P.

Thanks for the honest update!

I have two lights with no lanyard fixture.

What will work. Fishing line goes where a lanyard/pocket clip would go. Tie a knot and put it in the yellow part and crimp with the crimping tool, electrical yellow 12-10 gauge wire with a circle for making electrical contact
this is where the snap ring on your lanyard attaches/detaches.
I have two set up this way one is
Shadow stone white 26650, and the other is SolarForce L2P works for me.

Foy, I’ll be happy to adopt yours rather than have it live in a household where it is unwanted and abused.
I think my yellow P1 is one of my coolest P60 lights, just because it is different.

And it wants a new brother…

3-8-13 update

I finally realized that my P1 is the perfect EDC because I don't care what happens to it and I don't have to be careful. With that in mind, I stuffed it full of E1320's über-powerful 5-mode U2 drop-in and proceeded to drop/bang it into engine bays to my heart's content. I must say, my respect (however grudgingly) has grown. It's been a pretty good flashlight.

I still think it's boring and ugly but, it is a good torch.
