[Review] Convoy L21A w/ KW.CULPM1.TG | We got a new throw king ! | Beamshots, Thermals and Output

The K1 is driven a bit harder and has a slightly larger reflector.
Not sure about exact numbers from the K1.
The convoy is more basic, but built like a tank.
It has a bit lower numbers as the K1

I don’t have the K1, but since both flashlights share a similar form factor, I’d say the K1’s numbers sound a bit bloated.

Looks impressive for sure! :+1:

How would that compare with M21C (with the same LED)?

Convoy M21C

Problem with this light is no momentary-on for distance spotting/playing!

I can atest that this L21a woth CULPM1 is an amazing thrower, beautifully machined, built like a tank, and really handles the heat from the osram well. Just last night I was spotting deer with it and kept it on turbo for awhile (over 2 minutes) and didn’t notice the heat in the head. I’ll be interested to see your thermal measurements!

I would recommend this light to anyone looking for a great thrower in this mid size range light for a great price! I can’t say enough about it

Buying it from AE and shipped to the UK, it comes up to £40.80 (about 56$), including the now automatically added tax, in this case, of £6.80 (tax started being added since 31.12.2020).
I certainly felt that tax on my recently bought Sofirn TK70, which rose the final price from £41 to £49.
Is there maybe a better place to buy it from?

You can ask Simon for a BLF discount, which is 15% I believe.
Other sources are equally priced, and might need additional shipping fees.

Here's my thermal regulation chart for Turbo

What I observed while conducting the thermal regulation:

  • The driver is constantly regulating the output in order to keep the temperature below a threshold.
  • At around 15 minutes, the flashlight's temperature and output stabilizes at around 850 lumens.
  • The flashlight's temperature never got too hot.

I shall say that I'm really impressed that the flashlight was able to maintain > 1000 lumen for such a long period.

This is what I had thought You may find, amazing!

Thanks for letting me buy another thrower I don’t use in the city

Hehe
I am also in the same situation. I love owning throw monsters, although I rarely get to utilize their full potential in the urban environment.

I feel for you city slickers. I don’t even like full moon nights.

ive got a few of these leds coming and will be making a few mods to my flashlights

got 1 coming on a 16mm pcb for a aa tool

and a few 20mm boards for some c8 convoys

loverly jubley

Thanks for the graph! Convoy’s new buck driver is impressive.

Does anyone here know if there is any benefit to using a 40T in this light? It seems like the Samsung 50E would be the longest running and from what I understand work equally as strong as the 40T since 8amps is the limit anyway.

Is the 50E the ideal battery? It should be able to push this light to its max possible power still right?

Yes I be,8eve you are right about the 50e, since the driver is not running over 8ampa ever.
I run 40t, but only bc that’s all I have. 50e should be the same, unless there is some reason voltage sag or some other aspect takes place but I don’t know .

I don’t see any reason why you can’t use a 50E, but looking here I think the 40T probably performs better.

Certainly for the majority of the runtime. Or to put it another way, the larger capacity wouldn’t give you longer times, in fact probably shorter ones with less stability on the output.

Samsung 50E is now considered already an outdated cell, instead which you can get cells with similar capacity, but with better internal resistance (continuous current capability): 50G, 48X or (the currently hard to find, but fairly new and performant) 50S.

Chicken Drumstick, you can also look at 21700 discharge curves in the 26650 comparator (where all of the curve is shown).

And I might think, that 40T also starts to be a slightly outdated cell (but for the first third of its capacity, still pretty good), as for mid current applications, the 50G seems to be already a better choice - and once HKJ shares a test about 50S, I guess, that will be even better.
