ModLite Killer

People seem to love to hate Modlite because their price’s but I’ve never seen anyone suggest a build that even competes with them let alone made in the USA.

So here’s the criteria.

Of course 18650.

Mega thrower (Plhv2) like five degree beam angle in a tiny package, Convoy M2 relector size, the convoy relector is okay but still doesnt have the crazy hot spot im looking for. 1 inch wide X 7/8 inch Tall.

Something like the CREE XP-L HI V3 or Osram CSLNM1.TG??? what do you think? Believe modlite uses the Osram.

Driver- Linear, 100% only locked out(cannot be changed at all), low battery warning flashes. USA MADE

Thanks

yea, sounds great, good luck with a build. keep us posted

Never seen Modlite before or any hate here at BLF for it.
.
After reviewing their website, the price is high and I’m sure the quality is high as well.
Good Luck on your venture, maybe consider a LEP light.

And Welcome to BLF. :sunglasses:

They might be using the cslpm1 LED. It is the 2mm^2 version of the nm1. It should be pretty easy to replicate the performance of the modlite as far as brightness and beam intensity. But the single mode linear driver is maybe not something you can get off-the-shelf that I know of.

I mean, MTN sells linear drivers that can be ordered as single-mode only. And he builds them in the USA (Utah), though as with any other most of the components will be from overseas.

I’d recommend starting with either a Convoy M2 or maybe even a Jaxman M8 and picking one of the white flats, your choice of linear driver with 1 mode (Simon or Led4Power may have non-7135 based drivers if you prefer that, unsure about single-mode options), and then when you assemble it you can pot everything yourself so you know it’s rock solid.

I’d say pflexpro but they’ve been unavailable for some time now. If you’re interested in weapon lights or truly tactical lights, the “other forum” (candlepower) may be a resource worth checking on.

those are weapon mount light, must withstand recoil, vibrations, thousands of cycles as well abuse, and harsh environment, such lights require special considerations, sure you can slap something together with off the shelf cheap parts, but will it hold up to the same use modlite is designed for? most likely not a chance.

Those seem like nice lights, but holy smokes the prices are pretty high. I could almost get 2 Olight Odins (with batteries) for the price of one of their lights, but again, hose are high quality, plus made in USA probably adds $150 to the price off the bat  . I figure you could take something like a Convoy S21B, with CULPM1 Boost Hx with the 12 mode driver set to 1 mode and be as good for about $30 shipped. Not sure how much abuse it would take from full auto fire though.

I’ve been wondering something similar.

Wonder how the OP made out in their quest for this? I have the weapon light body, looking to craft a head that is as good or better than oem ModLite head.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Depends how you define “better”.

Brightness, throw, durability, size/weight, efficiency, CRI, CCT, etc

Fair point. Specifically, I would like to craft a head that fits the thread pitch of the current Mod Lite weapon light body. Minimums being: meet the current candela rating of at least 50,000; at least 600 lumens; have a cri of 80+; with a cct of no greater than 5700k. I am just starting this project. Would love to hear from my fellow enthusiasts.

Best.

Why fit the body? The body isn’t really special.

Its the only weapon light body that I own. Id like to create a head for it in lieu of purchasing one. Trying to keep cost down.

Getting a head machined to match the threads will not be a cheap prospect.

Agreed. Looking for an off the shelf head (shell) to fill with led, driver, etc… to complete. The threads are Surefire Duel Fuel (18350) sized. There are heads to purchase but they’re expensive. Thought I could create one. Perhaps there are few, if any, options. If the forum members here aren’t aware then I suspect there are not many options available other than purchasing an existing head (Malkoff, ModLite, Surefire Dual Fuel).

You might gain some ground if you contact ModLite and ask them what the thread specs are. I called SureFire once for some thread specs and they gave them to me.

Other than that, I’d take a look at Lumens Factory parts.

Thank you for the suggestions. I will inquire about the thread specs. They will be helpful to know.
