[Review] Wuben E6 || 14500 / AA - OSRAM CSLPM1.TG || An ultra compact EDC thrower || 10% Coupon Code

The Wuben E6 was sent to me by Wuben for evaluation.

The E6 is a compact little thrower that runs on an 14500 cell.
It's e-switch operated and comes with a matte black finish.



Its switch is surrounded by a metal ring and is backlit.



The flashlight comes with a lightly crenelated bezel which protects the glass lens.



The head of the E6 houses a smooth reflector along with an OSRAM CSLPM1.TG
Thanks to a centering ring, the emitter is perfectly centered.



The head can be easily taken apart, since the threads are not glued.



As you can see, Wuben has followed a very interesting design for the head's internal components.
The OSRAM CSLPM1.TG sits in a small PCB in the center of the head, while the driver board is hollow in the middle and wraps around the emitter PCB.
Such design allows Wuben to produce a very compact flashlight with a quite deep reflector.



The rear of the E6 is flat, which allows the flashlight to tailstand.
The side flaps are drilled in order to be able to accommodate a lanyard.



As can be seen, the head and body are constructed from a single piece of aluminum.
The tail threads are very smooth and are anodized.



The tail houses the copper spring along with its board.



Wuben has used a brass tab as the positive terminal, in order to decrease the overall resistance.



Of course, being an EDC light, the E6 comes with a pocket clip.



The pocket clip is very strong and robust.
It's held into place with two torx screws



The E6 is powered by either an 14500 or an AA battery.
As usual, the manufacturer has included a Wuben branded 14500 cell that's capable of 920mAh of capacity.
I actually did two full charge/recharge cycles and its rating seems accurate.

User Interface

Note: As already stated, the E6 is a pre-production model. Its final firmware might differ from my sample.
Here's all the actions supported from the flashlight's UI.

Turn on/off: Single press.
Mode cycle: Long press ( Low > Mid > High > Low > ... )
Strobe: Double press.
SOS: Double press while in Strobe.
Enable / Disable e-switch backlight: Triple press while off.
Lock / Unlock: Quadruple press while off.

Output

Here's the output measurements I recorded, along with the respective current draw.



As can be seen, the E6 pushes 972 lumen at High, which is very impressive for such a compact flashlight.
What's more impressive is its beam throw capabilities (beamshots coming tomorrow )

Things I liked

- Excellent build quality.
- Very compact design.
- Uses the OSRAM KW CSLPM1.TG emitter, which is an excellent choice for producing a nice long beam.
- Its performance and beam throw distance is very impressive for its size.
- Very lightweight.
- The pocket clip is great.

A few improvements I would like to see.

User-Interface suggested improvements:
- Add an even lower brightness mode (Moonlight).
- Strobe mode should be accessible via Triple click (not Double click).
- Allow quick access to Low (via Long-press while off) and Turbo (via Double click).

Design suggested improvements:
While testing the E6, I noticed that some batteries wouldn't fit in it due to their length.
After a few measurements, I found out that the E6 will only accept 14500 cells that are max 51mm in length.
I think that's quite a problem, as a lot of 14500 celss are 52-53mm in length.
Just as a reference, here's a picture comparing Wuben-branded battery (it's the blue one, on the left) that arrived with the Wuben E6 with some other 14500 cells that I have.

Overall I think the Wuben E6 will turn into a very popular flashlight.

Looks like fun. Would love to see them take this approach on a tube light rather than a thrower - could make for a nice compact EDC and some zebralight competition.

bilakos, I’d love to see the light pictured next to other common lights (maybe Tool AA and Convoy S2+ if you have them?) for a good size reference.

Really interesting / cool how they did the driver. Unibody, too… nice.

Wow. So shorter than a Tool AA and head is a little wider than an S2+?

I said I was done purchasing new lights for a while… I don’t suppose this supports lower voltage chemistries (with reduced performance) as a backup to the 14500?

It does run on AAs as well!
Today I was short on time and couldn’t thoroughly test everything, but tomorrow I’ll make sure to update the thread with some AA measurements.

Yes, there’s mode memory in place.
As for the spacing, I agree. Visually the modes are OK, but I wouldn’t say no to a more refined mode spacing. For example, I think something like this would work nicely:

UltraLow: 1 lm
Low: 15 lm
Medium: 130 lm
High: 450 lm
Turbo: 900+ lm

I’m always excited by new AA/14500 offerings and this one looked appealing …but then it occured to me that aside from the OSRAM it might be very similar to another light already in my collection. Although it would be fun to compare the XP-L Hi to the CSLPM1.TG’s performance.

I would complain only (at this time) about the clip. Cannot rid of the thought it's poorly designed.

It should be deep pocket carry and not partial as it is now. By deep carry I mean only one radius and NOT 2way like on FW3A and Olights...

Is it unibody?
Could you tell more about how did they connect the positive pole to the driver?

It is unibody, and I was hoping Bilakos could take another picture of the driver showing the whole thing. Very curious about the topology myself…

It is indeed unibody!
It's plausible that the driver is double sided, with its rear side also housing the brass tab (positive terminal), which goes through the drilled base.

I know I promised that I would be publishing some beamshots this weekend, but unfortunately the area I live in went into lock-down due to Corona, so we're only allowed to stay outside of our homes up until 6.00pm
