BLF LT1 Clip on shade (3D printed) test samples available

Hi folks,

I’ve been trying to find some uses for my new Ender 3v2 3D printer, so I have designed a clip on shade for the LT1. I tend to use the LT1 when working on machinery and having it shine in my eyes is a bit annoying, so the shade is about 160 deg and clips on using the groove under the diffuser. I didn’t want the shade to touch the diffuser to reduce the chances of scratching, or it melting if the head gets too hot.

I’ve printed two different types in PETG material which seems quite durable. The black edition stops all light, whilst the grey lets through enough to be used as a position marker. It takes about 3h to print each one.

I have 5 sets of two which I would like to giveaway for testing and feedback. Due to ridiculous postage costs from the UK, I would ask that the recipient contributes towards the cost of postage.

Destination / shipping cost donation suggestion

UK = £4
Europe = £8
Worldwide = £10

Please PM me if you would like a set for evaluation.

Before anyone asks I am not providing the STL files.

If folks are interested in the shades I may print more.

As these are 3D printed, the surface finish is not perfect, but they are pretty decent.

I will be working on a transparent red full 360 shade at some point, but I haven’t yet found a PETG filament that produces a real red when illuminated, most turn bright amber which is no use.

I guess I missed the peak hype for the LT1….

All the shades still here if anyone wants some.

Hey Big_Sam! I didn’t see this thread before today, or I might have jumped in earlier. I’ll PM you with details, but I will be happy to take a set from you. The joy of this of course is that I’m in Canada, so you get to recover hopefully more of the postage fees.

Very well done with this. Thumbs Up I don’t have an LT1 but it’s a fantastic addition, I wonder if covering the inside surface with some sort of reflective foil/mylar would make any difference, I mean to the light coming from the uncovered bit? you think it would redirect it or nor? probably minimal. Could try it out without any glueing with some flat aluminium cooking foil.

Sound like a good idea to try.
Some of the ‘wasted’ light should be reflected back through the lamp.

Received mine when I got home from work this evening. I’ve never actually (knowingly) held anything that’s been 3D printed before, first impressions are very good! A lot smoother and stronger than I was expecting. I’ll try and do some testing later when my boys have gone to bed. Thanks Big Sam!

I received my set of 3D printed shades from Big_Sam (thanks Sam!) this week and have just tested them out on my current revision Olive Green BLT-LT1…

Here are some photo’s showing fit and function, which seems perfect and the 3D printing, which is of excellent quality! I could see the shades being really handy when using the lantern as a worklamp, just like the other day when I’d got my head stuck in the cupboard under the kitchen sink trying to glue a broken brass handle back onto my stopcock tap/faucet using Super Steel epoxy…. Height looks perfect to also use the LT1 with the collapsible silicone bowel DIY shade. Thumbs Up

If you start selling these I’d be interested in one, especially if a reflectored surface improves the product!

Hello everyone, sorry for the delay in getting back in action, feedback I have received is positive so I am happy to produce more for sale.

I will start a thread in the sales section and I will PM anyone who has shown interest.

I have not tried painting one yet, but I will give it a go to see if it reflects any useful light forward.

I’m not trying to make profit with these, just provide a service to the community and cover my printer costs, so probably price at £2 per shade + postage.

Thanks, Sam

Hello Big Sam … congratulations !!! I was also very interested in the two versions. Will it be possible to send to Brazil? One more question: Would you also be able to produce a wider base for LT1 support when you are directly on the ground?

Yes I was thinking of making a base that connects via the tripod screw and possibly has folding legs also.

I would also like to make a large carry handle and a red 360 shade, the problem is don’t have much free time, but I will try.

I’m working on some bases that attach using the thumbwheel screw. As an added bonus I found the battery tube from the LT1 fits my Sofirn Q8 and means you can attached a lanyard via a tripod D ring.

I have plans for a version with legs that fold up, but can’t work out how to draw it yet, after 16 years of using sketchup, transitioning to Fusion 360 is testing my patience having to relearn everything.

That’s because the design is based on the Q8. Wink

I can’t find it again, but some time ago I saw a lantern with folding legs, using paracord to keep it open/closed. It was a prototype design on Thingiverse, maybe even here.

If you’re interested, you can use my LT1 model for reference: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4714912

Many thanks from the States, Big_Sam!

Received mine yesterday, and they fit & work great.

I particularly like the grey shade, as it lets some light through.

Much appreciation to you Big_Sam, for offering these up for feedback,

and looking forward to what you come up with in the future!

That’s a very impressive model of the LT1, thanks for doing that! My difficulty is getting my head around fusion, I’ve used 2D for the last 20years, and going 3D is a new thing to learn.
