Enogear Copper Cube Teardown & Mods

I just made that quick from some spare pieces I had.
It is 20mm x 18mm square tube I had left over from earlier builds with an 18mm brass ring jb welded in place at the front, some 2mm x 2mm magnets in the corners at the rear with a Zero Tolerance knife clip. There is some felt & kapton on the inside for a friction fit.

The bezel has a tube of GITD tape stuck around the inside of the body above the pill.
The tail bits are powder mixed with UV glue. :+1:

how much for one of this lights but instead fo 14500 battery can you make one that uses 18650?

Enogear did have an 18650 version but they seem to have closed shop.
These are a pain to modify.

PM Fireflies. He owns Enogears too. Im buying a bunch of enogear Stainless steel from him.

crx how do i get rid of the marks? like the procedure you used

I was reading your thread above, I have one of these copper tubes that just stopped working, I have used it daily for years and love it. It flickered the other day a few times not doesnt turn on, guessing the board has gone as everything else seems ok. I have managed to get it apart and am thinking of buying a new board but i have no idea where to start when it comes to soldering it in. Any chances of a couple of pointers for a noob? I see the board on mountain electronics but it is just a bare board with no wires, I guess id have to buy wire of some sort and solder it to the board, where to they thn solder to?

I have emailed the old dog, hopefully he will get back to you here - but he hasn’t been on here for a while (well he did pop in by the looks of it).

No not one of his lights, just the same light and as he had already modded one i figure it was a good place to start!

Honestly i dont wanna be without this thing. The patina is so amazing to and it is so good to fiddle with. Very tactile.

Oh god im getting sad at the thought of it not working lol

do you have the 18650 or 14500 version?

14500 mate

I put a 15 mm driver bought from mtnelectronics but it is not simple to place it

Yeah thats my worry :frowning:

Perhaps i can attempt it or find someone in the UK that will help

You might get in contact with Jackson. He still has several models of the Cube for sale in both battery types and he’s quite knowledgeable about the lights he sells, does mods and repairs, etc. I’ve never had this light myself but this reminds me to pick up one of those old stainless 14500 models before they disappear for good.

Just a thought, are you sure it’s the driver board and not the switch at fault - it may have just broken since it seems it’s had a lot of use, it might be worth testing it with a multimeter before buying a new driver board.
You can aslo test the driver board by using 2 lengths of wire from the + & - of the battery to the same on the board.

I did just that, def tbe board. Actually i see it days do not use 14500 3.7 and I recently started using that instead of enveloops oops.

That is probably the issue then

Thank you, i did thonk ofvjust buying a new one but

A. Im really attached to mine
B. Shipping is more than the cost of the light!

I just linked to his product page for convenience…contact info on the site. He might be faster with advice/experience than waiting for CRX to appear (much as we would all love to have him back here regularly again!).

Just saw the 14500 bit…oops. Been there.

I would imagine that your emitter is just fine after that, likely poofed a chip on the driver, but I don’t know how those are configured. Jackson probably can’t help you with a new driver, but possibly so……not sure if Jack could anymore either but it might be worth an email to him (or to Ivy, his new CS rep….firefly-outdoor.com).

Great idea thank you, its nice and friendly here i think i’ll stay and share some of my other lights!
