SST40: Greenish 5000K or Rosy 5700K?

Hello everyone,

I have discussed some LED options with a flashlight manufacturer who is going to launch some new models very soon. Among these models there will be a single-emitter and a triple-emitter version, using Luminus SST-40.

I have searched and recommended some of our most desired LED bins (flux and chromaticity) to this manufacturer. However, since there are a lot of shortages in semiconductors right now, many parts such as LEDs are difficult to source. Currently, there’s only the option between choosing following LEDs:

SST-40-WDS-F50-N4501

5000K tint, N4 flux bin, DC chromaticity bin, above the BBL with high probability of greenish tint shift

SST-40-WDS-F50-N4572*

5700K tint, N4 flux bin, CH chromaticity bin, below the BBL with high probability of rosy tint shift

* supplier says CH chromaticity but did not name the order code. It is very likely that it is N4571 instead as I was corrected.

What is your preference if you had to choose? The result of this poll will help to select the most desired option.

definite 5700 Rose!

Definitely I prefer a slight rose 5700K over any kind of green. Although my eyes can self-calibrate to tint shifts very easily, as long as the light color is not too extreme or spectrum dominant.

SST40 (and SST20) color tint seems to vary with drive current too. So I think you should pay equal attention to tint at specific under-drive currents, especially since hand held lights can not be run at full turbo drive for more than ~30 seconds.

Voted for 5700K. I generally prefer it over 5000K (similarly 4500K or 3500K over 4000K), but really anything that isn’t green will do :laughing: .

What bin does Wurkkos use in the TS30? That’s 5000K and rosy.

Great bellow BBL emitter even low CRI is my no brainer choice over high CRI above BBL.

SST-40-WDS-F50-N4572 is not binned with the CH chromacity bin. It would have to be “571” for that binning. This flashlight company must be pretty clueless to not know to avoid green so it’s good that they asked you, and since you didn’t know either, that you made a poll about it instead of flipping a coin and it landing on green.

I could be wrong but I think the Astrolux FT03 XHP50.2 I got back in Dec 2019 was 5700K. I think it was the light everyone was complaining about whether they got 5700K or 6000K or something like that. To me it seems a touch whiter/greenish than the 5000K creamier/rosy look. I’m wondering if 700K more up or down is quite noticeable??
For me it would be tough to choose. So I guess I won’t choose. :smiley:

Neither of them. These so called “standard CRI” (I’d call them sub-standard) emitters aren’t of any appeal.

Going above 5000K is even worse with these, regardless of green or rosy tint choices.

If I had to choose SST-40 as an only choice, I’d go for DA or DH - but still, that would be too awful to conosider.

Even though I like the warmer side of 5000k, I’d take anything over green tint all day long. What does the 5700k look like de-domed or sliced? just a little lower temp and still rosey?
