Cheaper 18650 alternative to fenix ARB-L18-3500?

Hey y’all I’m new to the flashlight and rechargeable lithium scene and I’m looking to get some spare 18650 batteries for my Fenix hm65r-t headlamp it uses SST40 white and Cree XP-G2 S leds.

The Fenix arb-l18-3500 at $22 each replacement batteries they sell seem way overpriced compared to $9 PANASONIC/SANYO NCR18650GA 3500MAH 10A 18650 but I’m not sure what kind of sustained power discharge I would need for the headlamp. the protected cells I’ve seen from recommended vendors are limited to 10a sustained, do y’all think that will be enough or should I go for an unprotected cell with a higher output? Having no real experience I’d rather go protected than unprotected. I did order an xtar vs4l charger for future battery charging as I plan to upgrade all my lights to lithium over time.

Thanks for any insight y’all might be able to drop on me.

For 1300 lumens, 10 amp should be ok. You are gonna have to try a couple to see what fits best. Try Orbtronic web site for different models.

Awesome thanks for the info, I hadn’t seen orbtronic come up in my searches so I’ll definitely check em out.

Do y’all think it will be fine to use unprotected 18650 cells in this headlamp? It only takes 1 battery and from what I’ve read it seems to have some protection circuitry built in.

Unprotected should be ok as well. The issue with Fenix/Nitecore and some of the other more premium brands is that they also want to sell you premium batteries. So this is why you may have to try a couple to see which ones fit best.

If you are lucky, someone on this forum that has the same unit as you may answer you post.

Ah ok I wasn’t taking physical size into account just then storage and discharge capacity, thanks for the tip! If I find a good replacement size wise I’ll definitely update this

I would try the Samsung 35E 18650 3500mAh 8A Battery Protected Button Top. Buy from a reputable store to avoid fake copies !!

Thanks for the suggestions, the Samsung interested me, but we’re sold out at the websites I checked, I’m gonna go with the Ncr18650ga from liionwholesale they have good reviews and after taking into account shipping were better priced than imr and orbtronic. I’m glad I asked for advice because the unprotected cells I looked at would have definitely been too short and it seems like a lot of people use these sanyos in similar lights from fenix and other makers. 3 of these will be just a few dollars more than 1 fenix battery shipped, which definitely makes me happy, especially since they’re quality units

LIION Wholesale has never shipped me a fake or bad battery.

By the way ‘Dallaspitmaster’, keep us up to date on your BBQ adventures ! We just purchased a Pitt Boss Pellet Grill and are on our 3rd cook. We only used an Akorn grill with lump coals previously. Let us know what you prefer to use. :sunglasses:

Second on LIION. Trusted seller.

Hey folks, might buy the hm65r, curious if it has current protection, over and under voltage protection in the driver? Is that why they want you using a protected cell? I have tons of Sanyos. Anybody experienced with the design decisions? Thanks!
