review: Maxtoch Xsword L2K LEP flashlight (2021 edition) reaching over 3km

might be close enough to work

I’ll buy one to try, the inside ledge where it has to fit is 53.7mm so it will be close, but I’ll print a ring to go around the lens to take up the extra space and keep it centered. Thanks for finding it and sharing the link.

Maybe a large thin oring can do the trick. KD has larger 1mm thick orings IIRC.

That's looking pretty good! Beating the Acebeam W30 by almost 1 million candela :D

Mine arrived today. Still daytime so I can’t stretch its legs out outdoors yet.

UI is straightforward enough, but I never have liked the ~5seconds you have to be in a certain mode for the Maxtoch UI to memorize it. Mode cycle is high-medium-low then repeats.

Nice overall warm-white looking tint to the white. It’s LEP with an aspheric lens though so of course lots of CA.

This is the first light I’ve had that I can visibly see the beam inside my place in daytime— pretty crazy.

Can’t wait for tonight to compare it to my K75!

Coupon used!

Thank you!

@mattadores: Excellent.

@Twisted Raven: Did you test it in the dark?

Thanks for the coupon.

first time member and looking forward to trying out Maxtoch Xsword L2K when it arrives.

Cheers

Good choice! Nothing that currently beats it in this size-range.

Oh, and Welcome Matai O

Recently received my Maxtoch Xsword L2k (short version)! Thank you so much ChibiM for the coupon code :+1: This is my first LEP light, and I continue to be fascinated by the beam every time I turn the light on. The tight beam is reminiscent of Sauron’s gaze from Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King  Whipping the beam around a room with white walls in the dark makes items in the room cast very sharp and rapidly changing shadows. It really reminds me of the shadows you see dragging a point source of light around in a 3D rendering program. Or shadows from a time-lapse video of the sun rising and setting. The short version kit came with all the accessories shown in ChibiM’s review for the long version except for the lanyard, which I’m totally fine with. My previous flashlight with the most throw was the original BLF GT, and this light beats the pants off of it in throw.

Here’s a link to a basic lens protector/diffuser I created for the Xsword L2k: Maxtoch Xsword L2K lens protector/diffuser by attackhorse - Thingiverse

One thing I did notice was that—when viewing the beam through the diffuser—it appears that the edge of the beam is not a perfect circle. Here’s a photo:

This is not visible in the hot spot cast by the beam with no diffuser. Does anyone know if this artifact is normal, or could something inside the head be misaligned? It’s not a big deal. Just curious. Thank you for any insight you can provide.

The artifact is probably from the mirror blocking the light coming from the Phosphor on the opposite side (the lens reverses the light, you can't see this because the beam is symmetrical).

Makes sense. Thank you for your insight. Did some light Googling after you replied and found this photo of a piece of the internals of the Acebeam W30 posted by Vin on Candle Power Forums:

Even though it’s a different flashlight and manufacturer, the inner outline of that piece is dead on for the shape I’m seeing projected onto my diffuser. The Xsword L2K must have very similar internals. Thank you for your help.

+1 !

Ah, yes, that makes sense. The shape of the glass is likely the reason for that!

I’m curious why the hotspot is not round but has a flat part to it on the edge. I haven’t seen anything that I think would cause it. I’ll do more investigating though as I haven’t looked too hard.

I think its caused by what you see in post #58

Oh wait, you’re absolutely right :person_facepalming: for some reason I didn’t notice that edge when I opened up mine

Oh wow, here we go the X sword l3k debuted on Maxtoch’s you tube channel a few hours ago. Contradictions in the title page and the video’s specs, but it seems 650 lumens and 3000 meters.
