So I was just looking at the (what I think is) ridiculous world of WML's - high prices and 10 year old outputs, low cri emitters, ui's, etc.
anyway, through a series of event I saw a little marketing blip that said "Odin LEP".
now I know, I don't own an Olight, I tried the warrior mini and sold it in a weekend when I realized I paid $120 for a titanium light with terrible tint and low output.
BUT, ALL THAT BEING SAID
looks like Olight released an LEP, their Odin series, 21700 (weapon mounted) or handheld. 330 lumens and 1050 meters, on sale for under $200...
I don't know, does anyone who knows about LEP's think anything of this light? I just figured with the sale price and it looks pretty compact, it may be a decent light? Or are there much better ones out there for the price?
Ok thanks, mascaratumb. I have been following the new one Zoulas started but haven't seen the others thank you. I tried searching for the Odin on blf before I started a thread about it, but didn't see one for it. Just wondering if there was any "hype" about it or not on blf. I knew there probably wouldn't be, but figured I'd throw it out there.
Then again I'm more interested in Limintops new LEP via Freeme's GB anyway, it's less expensive and throws further it seems. So that right there may knock this Odin out of the way for me since I will never WM it.
I just bought the Odin Turbo to mount on a rifle. I'm limited by a 300 yard range and it closes at sundown, but this should replicate some hunting scenarios. I can post back if anyone is interested. The rifle is topped with an ACOG so at the very least we can see how those 2 work or don't work together.
Really, I think the draw of this is trying out a relatively new technology, but it's useless for home defense and for hunting at night I think you'd be better off with something throwing IR or 2nd+ generation true night vision glass. But a good night vision scope without the need for illumination runs into the thousands, so deep into the thousands that I haven't even seriously bothered looking into it.
Outside of military and LE use, you'd need a pretty specific set of variables for a setup like that to make sense. Looooong open treeless areas, and lots of practice. At around $1 per round for any rifles capable of reaching out that far and the fact you'd have to be absolutely positive of the safety issues surrounding shooting long distances in darkness. Even a fast bullet takes a couple seconds to cover 1000+ yards and I personally would be afraid that between the time I pulled the trigger and the bullet hit, some dope on a quad might get between the two.
I suppose that having visible light might actually be SAFER than night vision, at least someone downrange would be aware.
Odin Turbo is being marketed as a tactical weapon light. It’s totally unsuitable for this purpose. It would be about my last choice to mount to a weapon. See for yourself when you try it out. Imagine trying to clear a room with an LEP?…now that’s dangerous. Out in the field you have zero spill and a tiny high candella spot, your eyes adjust to the dark as there is no close up residual light. Then you have this extremely bright tight spot, almost useless for seeking out targets. May be ok at a range with a bench setup …maybe. I like Olight but this was a big fail to market this light as a tactical weapon light. Actually I think it’s unacceptably poor advice to do so.
I guess "tactical" means different things to different people. My use would be as a 300 yard dawn and dusk light in conjunction with an ACOG. This might be an issue because my ACOG has green crosshairs and the light from this is tinted a bit green/yellow. I think the point is throw though, I would be willing to give up some spill for some throw.
