Review: Convoy M3-C. Single 26650, USB-C, XHP70.2, 4300lm, 365m throw

Usb charging is no substitute for charging with desktop charger. Personally, it’s nothing more tha
another way for water to get into the light.

I can’t exactly re-mill the light.
Its got USB charging built into it so thats that.

But why is it no substitute? As long as it fully charges its fine, its not going to capacity test or test internal resistance or have a nice LCD that tells you how many mAh it put into the battery but i don’t see any harm in using it.

Charging curve (especially when it goes CC vs CV) can be less than stellar for cell life with onboard charging in some lights.

If it reports charged soon after hitting CV then thats actually an unintentional bonus.

Yep, and FWIW I can’t remember what the charging graphs for the new Convoy lights have shown but I’d be pretty likely to trust them.

Just have the early days of USB charging ecigs (or cheap, crappy ones now) in the back of my head still.

I don’t use USB charging as a substitute for using a charger but find it very convenient sometimes. It’s useful when I’m in a hurry and want to add a little charge or top up before I go out the door and also when my charger is already full or I’m just feeling lazy. I don’t loan out my flashlight much anymore (I lost a few that way), but if I do I’d loan a light with USB charging.

Of course it’s possible for water to get in the light but it’s not something I worry about. I do have a diving flashlight I’d use if I was out in a typhoon or flood.

I use a USB tester on mine to tell when done. I was wondering if mine was the only one with this issue. I asked Simon about it but he changed the subject.

Anymore, I won’t buy a light without it. To each their own.

I am having a serious issue with my M3-C. The driver must be faulty (green) because it’s always been draining the battery when off. Someone on r/flashlights asked me to measure the draw on the M3-C and I measured 134.3mA when on (low setting) and 27.3mA when off. I am hoping Simon responds to my issue. Does he respond on BLF?

That is definitely unacceptable parasitic drain and probably a defective driver. Best way to contact Simon is probably through AE if that’s where you ordered from but he does pop into the official Convoy thread pretty often.

Yep. I contacted him last night on AE. He read the messages but no response yet. I’ll PM him also. Thanks!

Ugh I want to buy this but don’t know if I can accept the UI…is there any other single cell light that can sustain lumens as well? I’ve checked out the other common brands but don’t see anything.

The Thrunite TC20 V2 stabilizes at 2000 lumens. There is a review here with some testing: Captcha

Might want to watch for a good sale though. At one point they were going for $62 and right now it is $80 “on sale”

The Zebralight sc700d also gets good numbers, but the beam is pretty floody. If you are at all concerned about throw it probably isn’t the best choice. And it’s $120

Yeah, I recently bought a TC20 V2 during a great (real) sale on Amazon, and it does sustain around 1800 lumens for about two hours, at least. Great quality light, and I like the UI, modes, and neutral white tint. The TC20 V2 also weighs only 143 grams, without a cell, and is only about 119mm (4.6 inches) long.

The M3-C also looks like a great light.

$64 right now on Amazon.TC-20 V2
Edit- the stepped UI of both the TC20 V2 and the M3-C are the same.

Very nice review, Dave. Thanks. I always wonder how good reviewers plan to use a light, compared to their others. Helps put all the data in perspective.

I hope we see some 26800 from Convoy. This host seems like a good place to start.

Thanks for the suggestions. I forgot about the 700d but it’s calling my name. Not quite as much sustained output but a great UI. I have a 600w Mkiii from 2015 and it is still a great light. Mostly used as a night light and it’s so efficient I forget the last time I charged the battery. The XHP35 is unfortunately rather green but very bright and the PID works flawlessly.

Thanks.

Convoy are now selling a 26800 adaptor.

One of the questions i have is that does turbo drop lumens because of head temperature or becasue its programmed to act this way?

Convoy are now selling a 26800 adaptor.

Great to know. Thanks.

Edit- I went through Simons store but can’t find the extension tube. Got a link?
