Convoy 4X18A SBT90.2 Feedback

Could not resist the $65 deal from BG. Awesome light. Build quality excellent. UI excellent. Running Molicel P28A. Very impressed , as usual from Conoy.

I also like the little disc adapter you get to make it compatible with either button top or flat stop.

Zoulas - glad to hear the feedback, been in heavy debate t buy this one or not. I think it interests me more than the new Convoy L7 the more i think about it, the L7 is just too long and i probably wouldn't use it that much.

Glad to hear about the UI, it has been hard to determine from what others are saying if the UI is good or not. lol. I mean it sounds good, standard simple ramping or 4 step from Convoy, how can it be bad?

Sound like you got it quick from BG? do you recall how long it took? i may order one based on your feedback lol.

3 minute turbo for a sbt90 light sounds good to me. i own about 10 convoys, never had anything but clean reflectors for me...

This one was fast. Probably 15 days.,

It is good turbo time, and it has a huge spill and hotspot. Even after it steps down, the throw is 800 m, backed up by very good spill. Here is a turbo beamshot:

What was the room temp?

I’m just running a runtime test for making a proper graph and at 24°C room temp it lasted 55 seconds before stepping down.

What I have noticed is this thing looks to be on a timed stepdown, not temp based. It’s now sitting at 43% output and at 58°C with no further reduction. This is exactly how the L21A’s 8A driver behaves. Way too hot to hold after 20min from the Turbo level

I think Simon needs to have a word with his driver engineer.

Okay, here’s how the driver is behaving.

- 50-60 second timed stepdown to 40% output (High 1750 lumens).

- After 56 minutes it reached 72°C head, 68°C body

- Switched on the fan and after 10 minutes the temp reduced to 51°C

  • Output starts to increase ever so slightly once it drops below 60°C

Seems the thermal management needs some tweaking to allow the flashlight to decrease so it stabilizes at 60°C. Also the timed step down needs removing so it’s thermally controlled

Here we go, my measurements are below. I think there is no problem, as the test was made in 30 degrees inside, whereas you hardly find even half of that temperature during the nights in my country, plus the test was air cooled most of the time with no moving air. Normal usage of the light is to be held in hand and outside on moving air - it should not get that hot. Even in that unfavourable conditions, it was hard to hold, yet not dangerous to skin, just hot feeling. I managed to take out batteries with bare hands in minute 30, was not that pleasant to do it though. Rubber cap opened with hssss sound around 6.5 minutes. Slight wind movement around the open window stopped heat build up, but was not enough to cool the light.
