Some Like It Hot...(and it's bound to get hotter).......

Or maybe it should be……Some Like It Hotter, The 2021 Sequel Starring, Marilyn Manson………

I’ve noticed moreso lately that a lot a folks seem to willingly tolerate flashes that essentially burn off their fingerprints. Almost like appreciated self-abuse with thank you notes sent to the maker. :sunglasses:

As for me from now on any flash manufacturer that allows this to happen in this day of driver temp regulation are hereby declared doofuses. Ya see we’re not dealing with low current batts of yore any more -much less the nuclear fission like LED’s themselves.

So yeah if ya wanna override the stock built-in driver temp limits then choose a flash that has that hidden option. (Like the trend is with strobes these days - most peeps want it UI hidden and makers are starting to hear us.) If ya don’t care then ya should be happy the potential to fry yer nutz off accidentally is eliminated. Or burning yer house down for that matter cuz ya forgot to turn if off or it got bumped into turbo-max residing in yer highly flammable pajama pocket one fateful night with the ol’ lady.

Ya can always go direct drive if yer into assured pain and all that too. FREEDOM!

Mini-rant off………

“Here hold my flash.”…….

SIZZLE.

“&$@!*ing ASHHOLE!!! WADJA DOO THAT FER!!!”

“Ahhahahaha………. GOTCHA!”

 :+1:  ?

PS. Essentially watt I’m sayin is that flash heat mitigating designs aren’t really keeping up with outputs if we’re being honest. It’s kinda like a race to out FRY the next guy. :open_mouth:

I only buy single cell flashlights.

If they get too hot too quickly on high, then that's a hard pass.

If that happens on turbo, and the light doesn't always start on turbo, that's no problem for me.

I never saw the movie Some Like It Hot, but I used to listen to Marilyn Manson's music.

Ok. Butt do you think a single zippy 21700 or 21800 these days will mitigate that? This is not to discount the race for more lumens. I have no problems with that except it tends to generate a lot more heat. The ever more appreciably potent batts are in the crux. They have a lot more current/capacity so heat stays and builds, stays and builds, so that it can ignite stuff. Think about this a little more if you will. I know, I know we’re not children.

Look I think some makers are making an effort so don’t get me wrong. I think they’re starting to come around that these things CAN be inherently dangerous so now it’s up to us to be extra-carefull. Butt the trend is that more output equals more sales. Will there be an industry-wide standard even in China due to things getting a bit out of heat build up control?

PS. The first manufacturer that puts in a mini-fan system in their product wide barn-burners may steal significant market share from the rest. The BIG problem is how in the he*ll do ya make such a thing water resistant enuff that it makes sense.

I have an idea to fix that issue. Butt I won’t share it first in case someone has a better solution than mine. :open_mouth:

GREAT MOVIE. GREAT ACTING. GREAT FUNNY.

I don’t see any other viable solution for heat dissipation moving forward. I think all passive heat reduction solutions is hittin’ a ceiling vs more lumens which is inevitable cuz who doesn’t like being able to run mega turbo just for sh*ts and giggles and to impress others once in a while beyond 30 secs? In a semi-pocketable flash too.

The upcoming better uber-batts is the crux. The LEDs will keep up. If the heat problems are solved.

Butt how will makers get beyond this heat thang? Butt size matters too though, right? Sooner or later frustration may abound when new fantastic LEDs come out that can’t meet their true potential cuz of too much heat in der hands and pocketos.

Any idears, nutwads?

Ok I asked, Bueller.

Bueller sez….

“How about piezoelectric cooling, Notta? Don’t get hung up on just the fan thang”.

“Yes Bueller, except they require AC input AFAIK. Well there are inverters butt prolly too much impracticality there, right, Bueller? We may have to rethink the fan thang as being in effect the most plausible here due foremost the inherent limitations of portable flashes. In this case very hot flashes. ” :open_mouth:

PS. Ok, I feel like I’m talking to myself again. Like most of yoo nutwads here. :open_mouth:

PSS. I’m thinkin’ of going over to Enderman’s place and draggin’ him out of lockdown. Except Mars is one helluva long ways away. :open_mouth:

Where in he*ll is he anyway? I’m pretty sure he gets satellite internet.

Skrew it. I’ll keep talkin’ to meself.

However……

PS. The fan thang has a simple water ingress solution. Waiting, waiting, sigh.

PSS. Mini-fans are cheap. So that’s notta show-stopper, right, Bueller?

PSSS. Watt I’m really aiming at is let’s say the C8 broad size market here. I know mambo flashes that have mini-fans already. They don’t count.

Bueller has left the building with Lightbringer. :+1:

I haven’t seen Bühler in ages.

The WOWTAC A4 V2 is the hottest light I own. It gets branding iron hot on turbo or high in very short order.
I absolutely can’t hold onto the head after it gets cooking. I think the thermal regulation on mine is not working correctly as it takes longer to step down that the manufacturer states in the specs.

All the best,
Jeff

Design issues or defective or it’s just plain supposed to get hot? Maybe start a new thread on it to see if anyone else has the same problems? I’m a firm advocate of consensus indicators.

BTW just to reemphasize that this thread addresses heat issues as outputs continue to go up mainly due to batt advances and following that LED advances. I don’t think ‘turbo desires’ are gonna go away butt reality unfortunately is gonna stick around. You can do all ya want with a panoply of programming butt at the end of the day these remain purely mechanical issues that’ll need attention.

Something’s gotta give. :student:

“……willingly tolerate flashes that essentially burn off their fingerprints…”

just like in that old movie: Lawrence of Arabia.
here is the scene, action at 6:10.

“Righty o’! Here hold my torch, O’l Chap! Stiff upper lip now. Carry on and all that.” :+1:

PS. At the rate things are going they’re gonna put a cigarette lighting port in flash heads. :open_mouth:
