Enjoying your flashlights - despite mosquitoes!

I’m like sugar to them. Drop me into a cave on the gd moon and they’ll find me.

If I get one in the house, I’ll go on a blood-hunt with one of those electronical tennis racquets.

Depends on the skeeter. Some will leave a small itchy welt that disappears, itch and all, after an hour or so.

Some will bite on the back of my fingers/knuckles and the site gets all itchy and hot.

Some will leave raised welts that resemble various states. That includes those that bite as they walk, leaving Hawaii on my arm/leg.

Worst are those that must have stinky germy mouths, that will leave a deep crater in the middle of a raised welt, complete with small scab, that itches for days and the scab stays for a coupla weeks. Nasty mfers.

I am the opposite. Everyone gets more bites than I do. I am convinced, if I consume enough nicotine I will be invincible. The mosquitoes are starting to agree. And I like garlic, too.

When I make anything with garlic (garlic toast, garlic mashies, etc.), I use a whole bulb at a time. Not just a few cloves, but the whole honkin’ thing.

They still come after me.

And there was a “news” piece about that recently, and the takeaway was that ostensibly, people who smell tend to be the most attractive to skeeters. Obvious exceptions are myself, and at least 1 sister. I never knew what foot odor was ’til college (literally smelled what I thought was rotting cheese or a dead animal in someone’s apartment, when he took off his work-boots). To this day I don’t use, nor need to, deodorant or antiperspirant. I’d have to wear the same shirt for the better part of a week in 90/90 weather to get a good stank going. Etc. (Whole family was/is like that.)

And I have the Super-Sniffer, and would blurt out at work, “I smell banana…”, and someone an aisle over had a banana for lunch and the peel is in his garbage-can. Or apple, or cucumber, etc. So I definitely ain’t “nose-blind” like in the commercial.

And my ankles and the back of my knees are the biggest juiciest targets. Not exactly sweat-sites.

It’s definitely chemical in nature, but specifically what is still up for grabs.

Mosquitoes like to bite my sister, but no one else in my immediate family.

I think it has to do with each person's specific chemistry.

I would love to have one of these laser mosquito killers, I would come out every evening just to enjoy seeing them being zapped from the air! :sunglasses:

LOL… good plan

since mosquitoes follow our exhaled C02 back to us… if you exhale smoke, it messes up their tracking system… I hear weed works too…

for people who dont smoke constantly…
my camp kit includes sticks of incense.

placed strategically to mix incense smoke with their exhaled breath stream

deer flies also track C02
there are a couple different types, the ones with wings, which are bad enough, and then the ones that shed their wings and burrow under the hair…

Go Nuclear, DEET on a bandana for those mofos!

KIWF.

I went on a camping trip to a place i had never been before a few weeks ago, near Crescent, OR on Waldo Lake (the northern part). I was warned the mosquitoes in late June would be bad, but I’ve dealt with bad mosquitoes before. No worries right? Wrong. First day we were there, about 5 PM they started coming, not too bad, but after dinner we were scrambling into the tent because we were being viciously attacked by swarms. I mean bad, like Alaskan tundra bad. Never experienced that before. We were miserable from 6 PM until 9 AM and even then they were bad so we left for the morning to town and got heavy duty bug spray to help, but even then decided to cut our trip 2 days short. First time in 30 years I’ve been bugged out. Lots of standing snowmelt from the very hot weather. Citronella candles were a joke. Same with botanical bug spray. Only 45% deet worked enough to keep them off while we packed!

There are jokes, dude. They exist. Sorry if that one sucked.

I tried incense in my skiff, but I spill too much fuel so that’s unsafe because hot chunks can fall off onto the floor… They do make big bug incense sticks that are as effective as the small tikis.

LOL!

I did think you were being funny…
I was too…

seriously though, wearing a face net is not very fun
I usually go home at that point

but a skiff ride in a mosquito proof suit, sounds kinda fun too

If you are underway, over about 10mph, all you need is clear goggles. The problem is them hitting you in the eyes! Or, when you stop moving.

Lightbringer, blood sucking insects look for places where blood vessels are close to the surface and the skin is thinner.

Try using repellent that has Icaridina or Icaridin, here in Brazil we deal with mosquitoes every day, and it’s not just itchy the bite can give you Dengue, Zika, chikungunya, malaria.

Reminds me of an old joke….
Q: How can you tell a motorcyclist is happy?…….
A: The bugs on his teeth

:person_facepalming:

It’s not as bad as you think CRC, I know you’re kidding, I personally never caught any of those virus, neither did my family, I love my country
Here’s a link to Google images (I’d like you to know the place I live, just a short ride from home I have waterfalls and hills that are breathtaking.

P.S. I’d like to go to Canada someday (in the summer)

Those are amazing photos. We had an exchange student from São Paulo with us for a school year about 20 some years ago. We are still in touch and he sends pictures of his travels. There are many places I would like to see but have never made it there.

That is the most miserable isn't it. Can't pee or eat in peace and twenty get into the tent with you every time you unzip. lol. Have you ever tried picaridin? It's excellent. Sawyer seems to be the best brand still, 20% and it's actually truly odor free, no oily residue (and safe for plastics...watches, sunglasses, gear). I don't think it lasts quite as long as deet but I can usually get half a day or more before needing to reapply. The Sawyer is kind of pricey but it's worth it. Natrapel sells it a little cheaper but it has a pretty strong floral/powdery fragrance that drives me nuts and it lasts a long time on gear (maybe not so great for bear country). There are some backyard formulations like 10% and such but you don't want those for real outdoor time. Does ok with flies but I think deet is better there, but of course flies will ignore deet a lot of times anyway....and about the same with ticks. I probably won't use deet again but I still have a couple little bottles and a can of it (bottles I have are the old 100% and 85%...truly does last forever....). Headnets are lifesavers, too, if they don't make you dizzy or feel claustrophobic. Treated clothing helps a little but not when they're super thick like that.

Flying ticks...great. lol. That's the stuff of science fiction! Do they hurt like biting flies or are they quiet and painless like most ticks?

I think bobofett had the right idea…

MtnDon just let COVID-19 give us a break, you’d love it here, it’s about 2 and a half hours drive from Sao Paulo, I’ll go camping this weekend and send some pictures for you
