Enjoying your flashlights - despite mosquitoes!

I went on a camping trip to a place i had never been before a few weeks ago, near Crescent, OR on Waldo Lake (the northern part). I was warned the mosquitoes in late June would be bad, but I’ve dealt with bad mosquitoes before. No worries right? Wrong. First day we were there, about 5 PM they started coming, not too bad, but after dinner we were scrambling into the tent because we were being viciously attacked by swarms. I mean bad, like Alaskan tundra bad. Never experienced that before. We were miserable from 6 PM until 9 AM and even then they were bad so we left for the morning to town and got heavy duty bug spray to help, but even then decided to cut our trip 2 days short. First time in 30 years I’ve been bugged out. Lots of standing snowmelt from the very hot weather. Citronella candles were a joke. Same with botanical bug spray. Only 45% deet worked enough to keep them off while we packed!

There are jokes, dude. They exist. Sorry if that one sucked.

I tried incense in my skiff, but I spill too much fuel so that’s unsafe because hot chunks can fall off onto the floor… They do make big bug incense sticks that are as effective as the small tikis.

LOL!

I did think you were being funny…
I was too…

seriously though, wearing a face net is not very fun
I usually go home at that point

but a skiff ride in a mosquito proof suit, sounds kinda fun too

If you are underway, over about 10mph, all you need is clear goggles. The problem is them hitting you in the eyes! Or, when you stop moving.

Lightbringer, blood sucking insects look for places where blood vessels are close to the surface and the skin is thinner.

Try using repellent that has Icaridina or Icaridin, here in Brazil we deal with mosquitoes every day, and it’s not just itchy the bite can give you Dengue, Zika, chikungunya, malaria.

Reminds me of an old joke….
Q: How can you tell a motorcyclist is happy?…….
A: The bugs on his teeth

:person_facepalming:

It’s not as bad as you think CRC, I know you’re kidding, I personally never caught any of those virus, neither did my family, I love my country
Here’s a link to Google images (I’d like you to know the place I live, just a short ride from home I have waterfalls and hills that are breathtaking.

P.S. I’d like to go to Canada someday (in the summer)

Those are amazing photos. We had an exchange student from São Paulo with us for a school year about 20 some years ago. We are still in touch and he sends pictures of his travels. There are many places I would like to see but have never made it there.

That is the most miserable isn't it. Can't pee or eat in peace and twenty get into the tent with you every time you unzip. lol. Have you ever tried picaridin? It's excellent. Sawyer seems to be the best brand still, 20% and it's actually truly odor free, no oily residue (and safe for plastics...watches, sunglasses, gear). I don't think it lasts quite as long as deet but I can usually get half a day or more before needing to reapply. The Sawyer is kind of pricey but it's worth it. Natrapel sells it a little cheaper but it has a pretty strong floral/powdery fragrance that drives me nuts and it lasts a long time on gear (maybe not so great for bear country). There are some backyard formulations like 10% and such but you don't want those for real outdoor time. Does ok with flies but I think deet is better there, but of course flies will ignore deet a lot of times anyway....and about the same with ticks. I probably won't use deet again but I still have a couple little bottles and a can of it (bottles I have are the old 100% and 85%...truly does last forever....). Headnets are lifesavers, too, if they don't make you dizzy or feel claustrophobic. Treated clothing helps a little but not when they're super thick like that.

Flying ticks...great. lol. That's the stuff of science fiction! Do they hurt like biting flies or are they quiet and painless like most ticks?

I think bobofett had the right idea…

MtnDon just let COVID-19 give us a break, you’d love it here, it’s about 2 and a half hours drive from Sao Paulo, I’ll go camping this weekend and send some pictures for you

i’m glad you mentioned that—reminded me to go check the AA alkaleaks in my Racket Zapper, which has 3 grid screens, and an Elucto racket which has only a single plane of grid wires across the head spaced about 4-5mm. Only ever used them indoors for big houseflys, but think i’ll go do a mahsqwito test outdoors to see how they do.

I did see this years ago and totally forgot! I’ll probably suffer through this year. If we get another year as wet I’m doing this.

i just use a cheap little 20” square box fan and set it up close to where i will be sitting or working outside. i like his big fan and use one to ventilate my attic, my bug problem is not as bad as his.

Haven’t used that stuff before that I can remember. However some Coleman non Deet spray had that in it I think and it didn’t work either. This was the worst I’ve seen and no campfire because it was so hot out for the smoke. Kind of a bummer to drive almost 4 hours only to leave the next day. Next time we will go later in the summer when they’re died down and avoid that particular campground since it’s well-known for the mosquitos.

So this just works by filtering the air, without any sort of attractant?

Looks that way from the video. Probably less so w/o such a powerful fan?

Test Result: both of my racquets are a big FAIL

Didn’t kill any mosquitoes; their body weight is so low and size such that they just don’t get past the outer grid to touch the middle one, and the other one just never fired a spark or caught a bug. i used fresh AA cells and i was able to test them to cause zapping. So these were worthless for me, ymmv.

None needed, but he does show using a bottle of selzter water in one video to emit CO2.

My little box fan catches about 50 in an hour. i have noticed that those big stripe-leg variety are strong enough to sometimes escape, but most can’t fly off the screen once caught. The rubbing alcohol spray kills them so they can’t leave when you turn off the fan.
