[FLF] Five Light Friday - what would you keep?

It's 5 Light Friday - the game where you pick your 5 favorite lights and then ship the rest to me LOL

OK, so I had the thought the other day while driving home - what 5 lights would i keep if i had to get rid of everything else? Imagine a hardship (well dont, but play along..), or some reason you would have to sell, give away, donate, or whatever your collection and you could only keep 5 torches, what would they be? I mean this isn't hard for a collector of anything to do, right? We probably have imagined scenarios somewhat like this before with other things at least once, and tested ourself on what if we had to make the cut?

Ok, so the chips are down in your game of life, what's making the cut? heres mine, for this week LOL

(L to R)

Noctigon KR4 (xpl-hi 4000k 5D)

Noctigon K1 (xhp35 HI 4000k)

Reylight Pineapple Brass (Nichia 219c 4000k)

Wild Trail WT90 (sbt90.2)

FireFlies E12r (sst20 4000k FA4)

Here's why -

KR4 - emitters -  has the nicest xpl-hi 5D of any I have seen - rosy, bright and perfect! and its a KR4, one of my favorite edc's ever. But mostly because of the LED's id keep it.

K1 - emitter - The nicest emitter out of any i have. - the 4000k xhp35 HI looks more like 3000k, and is a perfect tint of orange-ness for a thrower.

Reylight - form and function! the thing is perfect edc size, fits perfect in hand, and is solid! oh, and i like tail switches!

WT90 - c'mon, its the WT90! we have lights because they light things up, right? this one does it WELL! this beat out the K75 btw..

E12r -  Form and Function! The led's are nice even though id prefer another, the button is fine with me. everything about this is just right, and its bright as hell! but doesn't have to be, its a great "everything" light. One of the best i own actually.

**It did bother me that i have two lights from one manufacturer, BUT, they both do have the nicest tinted emitters of all my lights.. So.... yea.

I tell myself I should do this for real to ease my occasional “collecting-guilt” a bit. My five keepers off top of head:

McBob 219b-modded ZL SC64c LE
D4V2 XP-L Hi 5D
Sofirn C01R (need a deep red)
Acebeam K30GT
Sofirn SD05 (mag switch)

Geez that leaves out a bunch I would not want to part with. Maybe more realistic to get down to a dozen…?

From lights I own and use:

Surefire U2 modded with MC-E and 18650 for it’s perfection
Acebeam K75 for insane throw
Acebeam K40M for wall of light from overdriven MT-G2
Zebralight SC600W MK3 HI for pocket versatility
Lumintop Tool AAA Ti with 219B onboard because I like it.

Pity only 5, if 6 I could add Nitecore Tube at my car keys.

Oh man everybody's choices are awesome .

I almost made it top six or even 12, but five and Friday had a ring to it. I started narrowing down from my top 14 this morning LOL.

I have a K 75 and I would never get rid of it. But choosing between that and WT90  is ALMOST impossible

I could never do just five, probably 10.

maybe a [TLT] Ten Light Tuesday thread next week LOL

There are five kinds of flashoholics: Those who like small edc, those who like large edc, those who like medium size edc, those who like small throwers, those who like large throwers, and those who like large power throwers.

I would expect nothing less than this selection, amazing! although, i thought at least one of those smaller powerhouses you love would be on there (i share your love for the ec03 xhp50 version!) or even the FW4aVn Osram, i think is what you have? but hey, flashlights are for LIGHTING things up, right? what better than some gt94's and MF05's!

how is the HK90 in real life, anyway? always wondered about that "unsung hero"? you dont hear much about it. like a gt94 lil cousin vinny or something..

I look at it as utility:
lumen monster, all purpose, beam pattern, thrower and keychain.

Bort is a generous guy Big Smile

I would do some upgrading if i was starting over, i would not mind an even higher lumen monster if i was only keeping 5 lights, and the P30 is also dated. Not to mention the M1 is now superseded by the M21B and the Moon RC2 to the RC2 200.

That last one is an interesing light, i had won the first one in a contest and ended up buying two more, the beam pattern is just useful for indoor work, more so than a headlight.

I never would have bought it so i only found out about its utility thanks to the giveaway.

A tough decision, but here are my 5 choices (from left to right):

  1. Zebralight SC52w L2 – A great compact flashlight.
  2. Supfire M6 – Custom built by Richard at Mountain Electronics. It has awesome lumens and throw!
  3. M2 quad – Probably my favorite CCT and tint of all my flashlights. It has Nichia NVSL219BT-V1 D200 L2 R9080 4000K LEDs.
  4. S8 – Has nice rosy quad Nichia E17A SM453-B12-R9080 4500K LEDs.
  5. S2+ blue triple – Has incredible CRI with Nichia Optisolis SM653-P9-Rfa00 6500K LEDs.

I’d rather use my flashlight around the house than turn on the lights.

My top 5 lights for the month of Aug. I am quite sure they will be staying with me for another year or two.

I am willing to sell my entire collection if i am in cash-strapped situation. You can always restart your collection when things improved. Electronics and electrical items have much lesser sentimental value for me.

freeme! I almost called you out to post here on another thread! I was very curious what the guy with access to so many lights would keep? Interesting! I just ordered a titanium s2r II courage from Nealsgadgets because ui couldn't find stock anywhere else, they are beautiful lights (though yours is the warrior mini v1?) which lumintop is that x1L? I have been on the fence about it. Must be good!

you're right about the electronics comment, much less sentimental, but I will say there are about 10 lights I would be pretty upset if I had to let go of, for various reasons.. then again I don't collect anything else beside a couple pocket knives.. I also stopped drinking and doing any extra-curricular activities, if you will...  this is my only outlet! Lol... go figure.

It has become 6. But it should have been 40 or so.

1) GT4 with 4× 80CRI 4000K XHP70 (I swapped the yellow-ish stock leds for leds from KD that have way better tint). Because it is the heaviest and one of the most extreme flashlights ever made, 28,000 lumen in a massive throwy beam. No compromises. Thanks to TA for helping creating it.

2) Wildtrail WT90, for the opposite reason: it hits a delicate compromise hotspot between size/weight, throw, and runtime. That is if you consider 5000 lumen with 1Mcd a compromise. Again thanks to Texas_Ace who made this posible with Wildtrail. I made a comfortable handle for it Smile .

3) Wildtrail D80V2. I changed the led for a sliced dogfart, great beam and beautiful tint now. This light feels better in hand than any other flashlight I know, and ideal for holidays. This much improved D80 was created thanks to the dedicated work of TheOnlyDoc who is a very friendly german BLF member who went missing in action two years ago.

4) Solarstorm SC-02. This was my most extensive mod in my BLF carreer, totally gutted it and rebuilt it, it is a RGBW light now with almost perfect colour mixing and 219A SW45 90CRI on the white channel, with a modified DrJones RGBW driver. No colour flashlight was ever made commercially that comes remotely close to it.

5) D4V2 with raised switch ring and 3000K SST20 leds. If I go anywhere where I likely need a light, this is the one, great tough build, reliable, and the beautifil tint that I like.

6) my EDC, Tool AA Ti. With everything modded: led=sliced 4000K 90CRI LH351D, driver=BLF-A6 transferred to a 15mm custom PCB, lighted ring red tail leds. I carry it for more than a year now, the longest time a EDC light has lasted there and I have no plans for replacing it.

My collection is in a bloated phase, as I try and compare various lights. For me it’s less about the specific light, so much as the functional slots.

1: Tiniest edc – Olight S mini cu
The copper makes the tiny light feel more substantial and easier to control. The switch is a bit mushy, and I haven’t gotten around to swapping the emitter, but I keep trying to find a replacement for it and failing. Bought another at a markup after losing my first.

2: Rotary/Nightstand light – Jetbeam rrt01 2019
I was initially disappointed when getting this light due to the size. But my opinion reversed upon nightfall. While the tuning of the ring is not perfect, there is a lot of space for ultralow modes, replacing Anduril sunset mode for me. Shame the new version is longer and has a redundant clicky.

3: Bright, medium size, with compromise beam – Noctigon k9.3
Currently this slot is filled with the fireflies eo7 with 219b sw45k. The beam pattern is perfectly even, but too floody for the outdoors. My old Fenix tk45 could throw similarly with less output. The k9.3 should have better throw, and I’m interested to see if I use the red channel. A Convoy m21d in gt-fc40 will compete for this slot when it comes out.

4: Pocket thrower – Lumintop x9l
I was expecting this one to be an impractical hotrod. But the beam pattern is great, the spill is brighter than you would expect, and the body is lovely and practically sized. The Noctigon Kr1 is fighting for the same spot in the collection, maybe the incoming sst20 version, along with 18350 tubes will change my mind. Manker mc13 with emitter swap will also be a contender, but my guess is that an edc light needs more spill.

5: Dedicated single-cell thrower – Manker u22iii
I’ll be sharing this slot with my Dad, as I don’t really need one, but he likes these a lot. Currently have an L21a Osram, which is capable, but somewhat unbalanced to use with the tailswitch. Have the K1 in w2 and sbt 90 to compare. W2 has cleaner, less ringy beam than the Convoy, with a tighter spot. Sbt 90 beam pattern is tighter than my x9l, but still versatile. The beam quality is muddy though, visible artifacts when spinning it. Also, it gets much hotter for the same throw vs Osram. Will try the fireflies t9r next. Then manker u22 iii for Osram, or mk37 or acebeam k30-gt for sbt90. Predicting the u22 wins, for compactness and the preferred tir beam pattern.

Dt8 lh351d and nov-mu would need to fight the first two, probably won’t make the cut.
