Oh yeh, just imagine a little rust and corrosion at the base of one of those prongy-things sticking out of the mast, to climb up on. Now imagine one of those snaps when he pulls himself up on it, with no tether.

Like most racing I expect they use markers/landmarks to engage brakes.
