Keep or chuck. UPDATE: It's shot, literally.

Charge it with as little amps as possible

I will, thanks.

I would charge it and keep an eye on it. If you want to be extra cautious, charge it outside. Make sure it doesn’t get too hot, and if it does, stop the charging immediately.

When it’s done charging, see how the voltage is after several days. If it remains around 4.1 volts, it should be fine. If it continues to drop, it probably is damaged and should be recycled.

Yup, sounds good. I would hate to throw out a alright 30Q but don’t want to risk a fire over a few bucks either.

Not worth the time and effort to salvage if battery depletes under ~2.4v. Battery will refuse to charge past 3.7V(nominal) voltage with regular charger. If lucky, it might reach 4V(never full charger) after many hours.

However, damage is already done to the battery. You can continue to use it but don't expect it to function like a normal piece.

The phrase ’ I think it was locked-out’ does it.

Charge it on a low speed, and try again

30Q’s are quite forgiving. And it is a waste of money to throw away a useable one.

Try charging it at 250mA or 300mA (depending on charger)
Check the temperature from time to time. It should not warm up at that charging rate.
When fully loaded, try to perform a capacity check.

The only lockout on any of mine S2+’s is mechanical. Do you have a lighted tailcap?
The “right” ones (low Vf, combined with high parasitical drain) can be silent killers.

How old is it?

Couple years old . Not many charges. No lighted tail cap. I’ll try tomorrow to charge it at a low rate and then do a cap. test. and see if it stays charged after that.

I don’t believe that this is true. I had a number of laptop pulls that were at 2.0v-2.4v that I put on my Opus 3100 and LittoKala Lii-100 just to see if they would charge up. All charged to 4.16v to 4.18v (higher on the LittoKala but that’s normal with my Opus).

Curiosity would made me give it a try. More so just to see if you could than trying to save a few bucks. But do it safely.

Update - I did a nor test and the capacity was good, 3063mah. The self discharge seems high though. Came off the charger at 4.18, settled at 4.16 and in one day’s time has reduced to 4.14. I’m going to keep watch and see if it continues to drop. This would explain why I found it at 1.8 volts in a locked out S2+.

2nd update: The 30 Q keeps dropping voltage so I determined it is shot. Literally. Taped it to a steel plate at my range and one perfectly placed 22lr satisfied my curiosity . Jumped off the plate in a ball of shooting flames.

Yeeee Hiiii! My kind of testing

You gotta put a volt meter on it to see if it shows any voltage.

And here I was thinking you cut down the shotcup from a 12ga shell, muzzle-loaded the cell, and blasted it out of a shotgun at a boulder or something.

That would’ve been kewl…

RIP little battery friend.

Hmm, got a link to that?

Was real close to letting an old HP printer have the same fate today but always worry a neighbor will call in a whatever all to local PD and don’t need the paperwork/hassle.

It will get jacked, just not here

To the OP;
Hey Man, Nice Shot!

Sounds like a little of this is needed:
