The There Are No Stupid Questions Thread

Is there a good place to buy lens (sans AR coating) for Convoy flashlights? I’d rather skip the work of manually scrubbing my lens clean.

Thanks, Jason! I was hoping you might reveal some good stuff. I’m psyched to know that we’ve got some real domain experts in our midst, even if they’re retired. Their knowledge is really impressive. It does seem like a wonderful hobby born of professional experience for such folks. Using your trade know-how and wisdom for a personal passion… nothing much else quite like it! These people and the diehard hobbyists who are learning and sharing are making this hobby so fascinating. And the small time flashlight makers keeping an eye out are learning from all this. Real “test subjects” taking their product, running it through paces using professional insight & discretion… it’s basically free QA for just the cost of a flashlight. Not a bad deal!

20mm plain glass? I got a bunch from AX in various sizes, just gotta look.

Eg, for my LuxPro lights, I measured the plastic “glass” in front, say, 43mm. Then just search on AX and see what’s out there, whether 2mm or 3mm thick, coated or not, etc., and just grab it.

For these, 20mm should fit, but you might wanna confirm that it’s not, say, 21mm or so.

000 and 112 worked from my iPhone 8 when I was many many kms away from any type of reception (when I got lost in the mountains)

edit: Triple 0 or 000 is the same as 911 in USA

I have a D4V2 TI 219B 3500k and a D4V2 sand 219B 4500k.
Can I switch/swap the whole driver, led easily?

I wouldn’t say easy, you have to deal with this wire mess

It’s really tight, I don’t get why they don’t use thinner wires for the aux LEDs.

Ah I was hoping it was easy. I found TI too heavy.

Is it difficult to transplant the electronics from one d4v2 into another, if I don’t want to mess with the wiring, i.e. don’t need to separate the driver board from the MCPCB? That does leave the matter of the pushbutton.

Reason for doing this: I am sort of wanting a d4v2 with cyan main leds, so obviously it should be in a cyan tube. But my white led one is already in a cyan tube. So I’d want to get the cyan-led light in another color, then switch the tubes around.

Compatibility with the O-rings. Best to not let them turn to pudding.

No you have to desolder the wires, otherwise you can take out anything.

If you got a squeaky trailer, by all means use it on that, but…

I have Wurkkos WK30 with the red / uv / LH351D and I have a S2+ KB CSLNM1.14 blue light

Based on the specs, can I swap the S2+ blue led with the LH351D?
The WK30 turbo is 3.2A vs 5A for S2+.

Can I use toothpaste to remove AR coating on lens?

It doesn’t have to be strictly silicone, but you should avoid using motor oil, petroleum jelly, or lithium grease.

Here’s a useful page over on CPF that identifies excellent, very good, fair, and poor choices in lubes for flashlights: LINK.

I bought a small 1oz tube of Nyogel about 10 years ago. I’ve not even gone through half of it. Great stuff. I also have “Magic Lube II” which is actually a silicone lubricant. You’re not supposed to use silicone grease on silicone o-rings. The black ones tend to be rubber, while the clear/white ones tend to be silicone. I’ve used that lubricant and had no problems.

It should be possible but with 3A it will not be as bright as with 5A. The NM1 has a 3030 footprint so it will not be a direct swap with the LH351D which is 3535. I don’t know if a 16mm MCPCB fits the WK30 or if it uses a custom MCPCB.

Thanks, I won’t go ahead of this. I might just slice the dome.

I would like to drill a 1/4” hole on the Sofirn SP36.
Can someone link me the tool that will create the threads? It’s so shallow I don’t want to buy the wrong ones.

I don’t see how to do that without punching through the light. Just buy a 1/4”x25 hex nut and epoxy it onto the light, I would say.

I have one question for veteran Flashoholics: When is the best annual sale of flashlights?

Could it be on 1 October, the Chinese National Day, since most sellers (including Banggood and Ali Express) are Chinese, or during the Black Friday (26 November), or during the year-end holidays, from Christmas until New Year Day?

I am asking because I am saving all I can to buy a few “big ones” during the biggest sale.

For AliExpress and some other Chinese web shops, it's Single's Day, or 11/11.
