(Interest List) Convoy Headlamp with Red LED only

Here in New Zealand I have had many, many customers (hunters) ask for a dedicated red LED headlamp, and Convoy has offered to make a new H3 model for it with a larger head. However, I ordered this Epileds 5050 Red LED in 620nm and dropped it into the Skilhunt H04R and even though it’s not running correctly at 1.4 amps, its performance is excellent. I’m thinking of perhaps just using this in the existing H1 and asking Simon to design a new driver.

I also installed one into the Convoy L21B and measured the following by removing 7135 chips

4.2A – 520 lumens
3.8A – 515
3.5A – 506
2.8A – 440

This LED is rated for 3A.

At 2.8A in the L21B I measured 550m. Much better than the Osram Red since it has a good balance of flood and throw. I also prefer it over the XPE chips.

Back to the Skilhunt H04R at 1.4A, I could easily see out to 100m, trees faintly to 200m, and eye shine much further. Most of my customers are hunters, so getting a suitable Red headlamp is what I’m going for. I want something that provides enough range so a flashlight is then only required on the rifle, instead of both handheld and rifle. Some are using a thermal and want a decent red headlamp to walk around with. Most headlamps only offer red as an aux with poor range.

If Simon set the current to 2.5A it would then open it up to the Osram Red for those who want the extra range, there’s not many throwy red headlamps out there.

Simon has ordered a sample for me in 660nm for testing.

Is there any interest on this forum for this?

Here it is installed in the L21B and Skilhunt H04R

I’m not a hunter, but I would be interested in this.

Thanks for all the work you do with Simon - you’re in a great position to collaborate with him and we appreciate what you’re doing :+1:

Thank you.

Yeah, just something decent for everyone is more of what I’m after. This LED gives a good balance for any application, and the H1 has the optional 60° TIR optic too

interested! I’m using only red light in my present headlamps and I would be great to have something that illuminates objects farther than 50m.

Did Simon create a Convoy H2?

Not sure, it’s listed on the CE cert I received from Convoy though. so perhaps it’s in the making

Cool. A bit interested with this project but depends on the final product.

Interested in a bright red headlamp, but prefer central emitter rather than L lights. Just purchased an Olight Array 2S with 200 lumen red.

Interestingly Simon has ordered a sample of the new SFT20 Red in 620 and 660nm.That could be an even better option

I like dedicated headlamps too for general use, but I’m pushing this for hunters so they can also attach it to their belt, moving your head around too much can alert animals, so depends on the application.

I’ll personally be selling this with the Skilhunt H04 headband mount, it’s much better than the rubber loops

Interested.

I would also be interested with some quantity. I still have no idea how fast these will sell, but I definitely have a demand for red headlamps.

I’m interested in a right angle red emitter flashlight/headlamp that has flashing red and adjustable power outputs. I like the size of the Convoy H1 and Skilhunt H04. I actually have the Skilhunt H03C RC which uses the Cree XM-L.

The problem with this light is the red is not controllable. Only outputs at 100% (about 100 lumen). There is no power adjustment to 50, 35 etc. Perhaps the Osram LE RTDUW S2WP would be better?

Totally interested in this for the novelty — there are no deep-red-only right angled lights out there except for the red LED D4W config. Would like to see more.

Wurkkos HD15R has two bezels with a floody red. 5000k white spot. Multiple brightness levels and access to a strobe and a beacon and SOS. Armytek C2 WR has one flood bezel with 4000k (warm) white LEDs and red all in the center. You can switch between the two with a double click while on or off. Four levels of brightness on white or red. And you can enable a one second on, one second off, beacon for white or red. They also have a slightly cooler white and red option. There are likely other options out there also. Although some lights with a red option do not offer multiple brightness levels.

The Wurrkos HD15R has both white and red with a flood optic, the website image is wrong and also the stated white range is copied off the HD15 with the spot optic, I measured 98m, they advertise 148m. After my review I notified Wurkkos and they haven’t even bothered to correct it. The thermal regulation is a shocker and I would never recommend it. I reviewed it to see if I wanted to sell it in my store, but I was extremely disappointed.

The Armytek C2 WR was sent to me for review, one flash of the white LEDs and they died. They also sent the Pro Max and that also arrived faulty leaving me me a bit put off from what I thought was a top brand.

Although not a right angle headlamp, you can’t beat the Sofirn D25LR.

This was raised with Simon before the D25LR was released and tbh it’s all my customers need. It’s cheap, okay UI with 4 levels for both LEDs, good range, and 660nm deep red. It sells really well.

The Convoy headlamps use an SS bezel which always causes a large ring around the spill which is a bit of an issue.

I’m interested also and thanks.
