[REVIEW] Cheap Nightlight from Home Depot

Just a quicky on a pair of Nightlights I picked up at Home Depot for less than $10.

Needed a replacement for one that’s starting to get cranky. Did an Amazon search, nothing tickled my fancy.
Took a look at Home Depot and saw these things. Two for $9.88 and in stock locally.
Nice to be able to return them if they – you know – suck.
On these cheap hardware kind of things a local buy is often a better deal.

Got them home and opened the package and – OK How the heck do you put the batteries in this thing? No instructions. Turns out the whole back slides off toward the bottom. No screws or tabs need be moved.
Takes 3xAAA and rechargeable NiMh work just fine. A single switch on the side for on and off.

I measured 17 Lumens. Which is plenty bright for the intended use. With 60mAh of current draw powering 3 downward firing LEDs.
The down facing LEDs is why I chose this design. I wanted the light on the floor. Not up at my eyes (like many of them do).
Time will tell how long a set of batteries last.
The motion sensing seems sensitive enough to give good response. The daylight off works in a moderate amount of light.

On the back is a patch of 3m double sided tape. If this is the stuff I think it is – be warned. It can darn near stick air to water.
So expect it to pull the paint off of anything you leave it attached to for very long.
There are 4 screws, two of which were stripped, that can get to the guts if you should so choose.
I might mod one to use an 18650 just for the heck of it.

For Five Bucks each? It’s a winner I think.
All the Best, Jeff

Good find Jeff, i like the down light feature too.

:+1:

They are sure cheap, and they actually seem kind of useful. Do they make any sound? Do you see any brightness difference between nimh and alkaline? What about L92 lithium if you happen to have tried those? I’d be careful with 18650 since I doubt these things have LVP. At least, use a protected 18650 with its own LVP.

I’m asking about brightness differences because I figure these 3 cell lights all work pretty much the same way, and I have been wondering about this issue.

Just noticed your post. Sorry it took so long.
I’ve got two working, one with alkaleaks and the other with Amazon Basic NiMh. Cant really see a noticeable difference in them.
Next time I take them down for batteries, I’ll stick’em on the lumen tube.
Haven’t got any L92s.

I’m sure they don’t have any LVP. I’d just have to judge the battery condition by brightness if using a 18650. I’ve got lots of laptop pulls that need a home…

These make no sound that I can detect.
Liked them so well I bought a second pair just to have spares.

I’ve got one mounted over a door frame so it give a nice general light in a bathroom. I mounted it upside down so the light spreads across the ceiling. No harsh lights shinning down (at least not much anyway).
All the Best,
Jeff

PS, found the directions tucked down inside some of the packaging.
Nothing to note other than how to open the light.
Also the one running on NiMh batts seems to stay lit for a few seconds less than the Alkaline version.
Difference in voltage or just the luck of the draw in the electronics?
