Which movie did you watch lastֻ

well, since the New Movie is only Part One,
the messiah/savior reveal might be in P2.

in a weird way, this Dune movie reminds me of Life of Brian.

Brian’s mother: “He’s not the Messiah. He’s a very naughty boy! Now, go away!”

I saw Candyman (2021).

It's the sequel to Candyman (1992).

This movie is pretty bad.

The acting is excellent, and the music is great.

There are some creepy scenes with good atmosphere.

Parts of the movie are entertaining, but overall, it's disappointing.

The film is co-produced and co-written by Jordan Peele, so I expected much more.

The movie also has a very weak ending that leaves a bad taste in your mouth.

That’s disappointing. Did you like the first one? My wife and I really did, and have been really looking forward to this one, but just havent had the time to sit down together and watch it…

I haven’t read the book yet. Was there much humor in it? Could that “beat around the bush” remark be applied to the book? Were the sand worms very significant in the book?

No humor to speak of, really. It was a very slow and convoluted book. You really have to let it “sink in.” I stopped and started over about 3 times until it finally “clicked.” But it was worth it. Sand worms are definitely mentioned and feature prominently at times, but they don’t consume the book. It’s mostly about Paul Atreides, Muad’dib.

I’ve read the first book 3 times. It’s incredible but different from the original film. It actually took me a few viewings to grow to love it.

Can’t wait to check out the new one.

I liked the first one, but I saw it before I started writing short reviews of movies, and I don't remember exactly how much I liked it.

Started watching the new version of the movie Dune, but stopped watching it, did not like it, I rather remember the original movie version that this modern version.

Watched Free Guy, I was good! Entertaining!

It sounds like the people who didn’t like the new movie expected a more refined version of the old movie. That’s why I was asking questions about what the book was like. It doesn’t sound like the new movie is necessarily inconsistent with the book.

Sounds like it might be a better adaption of the book but is a totally different experience from the first movie.

The first Dune movie, from 1984, had a wonderfully rich techno-steampunk aesthetic with dark overtones. It was so impressive, because it was also so immensely expensive… and at the same time, they skimped on the space travel SFX so badly (literally 2D illustration cut-outs floating over a starfield), especially in the recent shadow of the first Star Wars trilogy (Return of the Jedi was released 1 year prior). The screenplay really struggled to pay full homage to the book, while trying to make it work on screen. It showed. Theaters took to creating pamphlets to hand out to the audience prior to the screening, to help them keep track of all the peculiar names of things. Needless to say, the movie flopped at the box office. Major stain on David Lynch.

But despite all of its shortcomings, there was something special about Dune. It’s still languishing below a 50% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. I still think it deserves better recognition.

Knives Out (2017) with Christopher Plummer and Daniel Craig (the latter affects a thick southern drawl throughout the movie). It’s a tremendously clever murder mystery. Watch closely, there are clues and relevant bits of info every ten seconds.

Watched Cruella last night.
Wife & I really enjoyed it.
Good acting, liked the sound track.
Check it out.
All the Best,

Akira (1988), Beetlejuice (1988), and 300 Rise of an Empire (2014) all rewatched within the past 5 days.

Akira: Amazingly detailed animation and cool stylization. Week stomachs might want to steer clear. I like the story but it could be a tad less cryptic towards the end.

Beetlejuice: This movie is a mood, and a good one.

300 RoaE: All flash and no substance. But there is an awful lot of flash!

Thirteen minutes of brilliance by Don Hertzfeldt. See also “It’s Such A Beautiful Day” (2012) (as mentioned earlier in this thread).

Saw Akria in the theaters when it came out. Quite a Tour De Force in animation at the time. Beetlejuice was fun.
All the Best,

The Crawling Eye - from 1958

KATE: basically it’s John Wick, but with a chick!

Not bad.

Chris

I still think Akira looks amazing. The new 3D animation has no personality in some instances. Disney’s Luca is a good example of using animation the wrong way in my opinion. Instead of using the medium to create something fantastic, they used it to create the most bland an inoffensive content known to man. I’m not saying Disney should make movies like Akira for kids by the way, I’m just talking about art-styles here.

Awesome! And don’t forget “Fiend Without A Face”!

You’ll never view raspberry jam the same way again.

oh yeah.
FWAF

and
nightmares.

I liked Akira and Beetlejuice a lot.
