regarding the Squid Game with “dubbing” or “voice-overs”:
The next time you see a movie or TV show that was dubbed from a foreign language,
the voices you hear may not belong to actors who rerecorded dialogue in a sound booth.
In fact, they may not belong to actors at all.
I just finished it this past weekend. What a weird, weird show. The Koreans have an interesting “Manga-like” aesthetic. Pretty horrific combining the innocence of child games with adult mortality. Despite some of the strange dialog, which I imagine is something to do with how language is translated, there are some very interesting characters. Overall, I didn’t like it. It’s really too violent for the sake of sheer cruelty. An echo of how some people view others who are in desperate debt? (I didn’t really give anything away–this is revealed very early on, and exposed in the trailer).
Thanks – I’d not seen this SNL episode yet. This is really hilarious!
I never intended to watch this… but my girlfriend insisted I’d appreciate it. The scenario is an enclave of mostly white privilege wealthy families living in Monterey Bay California, many of them with large or palatial sized oceanside homes. Focus is mainly on the women & kids. Drama & gossip abound. The headliners are Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, and Laura Dern. I wasn’t feeling like I was going to like this from just episode 1, despite the good acting. But I held my prejudices aside and kept watching.
INTENSE.
Things develop fairly quickly. Very complicated, because of the flash-forwards. You’re telegraphed a foreboding of something potentially criminal happening later. And then you learn… It wasn’t what I expected.
There’s just 2 seasons. But, given the story, it kind of makes sense. The intensity would leave me drained at the end of an episode, so I didn’t binge watch until the last 3—because of the escalation.
The acting is terrific. The writing feels so amazingly real-life. This series got a number of awards and I can see why.
Anyone here seen “Warehouse 13”? It’s a 5 season sci-fi like mystery show, focused on what I’m guessing is like that warehouse of classified artifacts shown at the end of the first Indiana Jones movie.
“After saving the life of the President, two Secret Service agents find themselves abruptly transferred to Warehouse 13 - a massive, top-secret storage facility.” It ran from 2009 to 2014. Described as “part The X-Files, part Raiders of the Lost Ark and part Moonlighting.”
I just started it… and it’s OK. Acting is a bit weak.
