Olight O-pen Sucks

Since all the pens are equally horrible at writing, I was hoping someone knew if the cartridge is a standard size and I can buy one that writes consistently.

Interesting. My OPen Mini writes fabulously.

It’s weird, they’re smooth with good resistance, then the ball stops turning. It’s like there’s wax or something on the paper, but I’ve tried all sorts of paper. Maybe I’m just a greasy Italian.

Mine (purple Open Pro) writes pretty well. For refills, maybe try asking on Reddit, Olight seems more popular there.

My O’pen Mini had a tiny bit of the red wax protective cap residue at the point and paper fibers did accumulate there until I cleaned it off.

Odd, a bunch of pens I got from the bank (freebies, with keychains, door-openers, etc.) as well as some pens a realtor friend gave me, all have the same problem. They tend to “skip”, as if writing on tainted paper or something.

All my old cheap Bics, PaperMates, etc., still write fine on the same paper, so it’s definitely the pens.

My O’pen skips also . I just thought I got a dud .

My preferred EDC pen/refill ink type is Pilot's Gel in a .5mm tip. I suggest searching through JetPens comprehensive online store to match up the size and style of refill you'll need for your OPen. The link takes you directly to the Refills page. I hope that helps!

Found the above video clip showing that Schmidt Mega Line 4876M can be used as an ink refill for the Olight OPen.

Another substitute is this Lamy M22.

Both of them are not cheap. Will continue searching for some cheaper generic ink refills.

Well it’s Olight so………….

now dont be mean, their lights are high quality. but i agree the pen seems kinda meh…

Completely agree.

I really like most of their stuff I’ve gotten . Not so much the pen .

can u be more specific? just say agree means not much….

I agree with Rusy Joe’s statement.

Olight’s frequent use of proprietary batteries and sealed flashlights with non replaceable batteries is not only a turn off, it’s really damaging to the hobby.

I recently took apart an Olight i5TEOS, and it’s not friendly at all in there. The only way to get into it was prying out and damaging the plastic lens a little. Driver and LED star were installed in a basically permanent way, and doesn’t leave much room to work with, with everything needing to be shoved in through the bottom. Original LED was a horrible blue tint. I still might be able to save it and get a working high CRI flashlight out of it, but I definitely wouldn’t get another Olight flashlight with the intent of opening it up.

There’s a FB group for olight modders, though it’s got more chatter than modding. Some mod work looks respectable.

Lesson learned.
Every Olight sucks.
Mike

wow how mature BLF has become these days. nothing wrong with their lights, robust and good quality… if anything sucks its imalent, exploding lights in your hand… haha

I agree its kinda sucks ucant use any type of battery but i think they do this to protect the users so that nobody will dig up some old battery and then something bad happens or they will complain why lumens is so low when battery is bad quality… It hasnt stopped me to enjoy the lights. Magnetic charging is a good way im surprised not more offer this option.

Thanks, that’s the info I was looking for. Seems like there are some decent options on amazon that probably drop right in. I think I will put orange ink in my orange open and black in the black.

Too bad the pro doesn’t have lockout, they will probably do a pro 2 next that does, which will confirm their lameness…
