According to the datasheets when comparing, the .3 does a little better with heat - drops less voltage per degree C, and thermal resistance at the junction is a little lower. Probably not enough to be noticeable. The .3 is available in P4 bin though, getting more lumens for free (no extra amps or heat), but again, low, maybe about 7% bump from P2. The Vf hasn't changed, so it should work well with existing drivers.
The biggest reason for 70.2 lights not having sustained brightness is the driver design and overall flashlight design. Because the LED is capable of high amps, high output, it's usually pushed hard in the design.
Thanks. There are some XHP70.2 lights with good sustained brightness - Convoy M21C/D, Acebeam E70, Thrunite T2. Just interested to know if there will be any improvements with the XHP70.3.
Where everybody talks about efficiency of .3, i’m more interested in having no ugly yellow corona around hotspot. That’s my sole interest in these emitters. Other specs cannot be worse than it was on previous gen.
Linked corrected, and don’t forget that the XHP50.3 HI in the link is the 6v/12v version as opposed to 3v for the SFT40 but otherwise yes, it will be good to see how the XHP50.3 HI performs the way we use them
The Cree XLamp XHP50.3 HD 6500k is also available. Not really my color temp. I guess I will keep on waiting for the xhp70.3 warm white to become available.
Has anyone found an in-stock supply of XHP35.2 HI in flux bins greater than D4? I hope to find E2 flux bins or greater in 5000-6500K to reflow into my stock GT. Crees data sheets appear to be dated and they are notorious for not listing all available variations. I’ll probably settle for a D4 if nothing turns up. Mouser has plenty in stock and they are easy to deal with.
Still no listings showing for XHP70D-H0 variations (XHP70.3 HI). Id love to try one in a GT with a TA driver, assuming high flux bins once available. Cree’s data sheet looks promising.
I’ll probably cross post this in a few other threads to see if anything turns up…
Thanks for the heads up. I haven’t bought any LEDs for a long time but I think I’ll grab me a few of these.
Man does Mouser make searching for LEDs a pain… if you select XHP50D-HI series, which it’s supposed to belong to according to Mouser, and check “in stock” flag you get 0 search results. In the Cree datasheet they are clearly called XHP50.3 yet Mouser want to use some other series name which in turn doesn’t show this LED that they themselves have labeled as belonging to.
