Meet the Maxtoch X PRO : the new single-cell "King of Throwers" of 2021

It's calculated. In order to take a good picture of an object that far away, you need 3 things:

  1. Iceland clean air
  2. A camera with good lens and tripod
  3. A photographer who knows how to take night pics.

Look it up because I might be wrong but I think it's measured candela divided by the standard (.25 lux), then the square root of that. Changing it to 1 instead of .25 seems to give roughly half the value on the couple I ballparked. I actually think changing the standard might be helpful to consumers but I wasn't paying much attention when all of this was being discussed and I can't find a free copy of the actual testing standards (ANSI and ASME don't give away anything for free). I don't know if there's a chance changing the value could affect very low-powered devices in a negative (marketing) way or what other aspects might really matter and caused them to decide upon this seemingly worthless value of one quarter lux.

The ol' light wiki: https://flashlightwiki.com/ANSI-NEMA_FL-1

I'll read through this one later because it looks like some discussion to chew on without having to wade through a million posts on CPF: http://www.led-resource.com/ansi-fl1-standard/

I think the Maxtoch X Pro is interesting enough to deserve its own thread, so I started a new thread to discuss ANSI throw compared to visible throw

Good stuff Dave1010!

Thank you

ChibiM- thanks for the info!

question- In the K1 graph, is the "x" axis supposed to represent "lumens" or "candela? It's candela, right?
Thanks!

ChibiM - thanks for the very nice review I found on 1Lumen.com.

Unless you have an obsession for owning the best, brightest, etc, light, there is a small matter of the price. Maxtoch focusses on selling their lights to hunters, who value functionality over looks and price. But for me that price is just a bit steep for owning yet another wow-light. Slap in a green Osram and lower the price and I might be persuaded.

Translated quote of Fokke en Sukke:

“I see that it performs extremely well my dear fellow, but does it also work in theory?”

And I repeat once more: lux measurents are a direct measure of hotspot brightness and as such it gives you the same information of the real life throw distance that your eyes will give, but way more accurate (eyes suck at estimating brightness).

What will also affect real life performance/usability of a thrower is hotspot size and tint, beamshots can provide that extra information, but how bright things light up in a distance is purely determined by the throw number, as measured with a luxmeter.

I just learned about that comic strip after Googling the name...

Does "Fokke en Sukke" sound dirty in Dutch?

The names are reminiscent of dirty words but Fokke is actually an existing dutch name (Friesian), not sure about Sukke.

Yeah, on Wikipedia it says:

...the creators have pointed out that "Fokke" and "Sukke" are ordinary West Frisian-language names...

But in English, it sounds like something you'd ask for from a lady of the evening.

I changed it to candela :D

added some beamshots to the OP

If it sounds alike, it probably means the same. Or does it?

Here’s a quote for the Eternal Hall of Fame.
From our long-time-ago Secretary of State: mr. Josef (what’s in a name) Luns.
When asked about his hobbies, he replied: I fok horses.

EN: horse breeder
FR: eleveur de chevaux
DE: Pferdezüchter
NL: paardenfokker

Just not in that order.

Head-heavy. Nope.

Fun fact, i bought the original 2*21700 version L2K with Chibims coupon code half a year ago or so.
After using it for a few times the length annoyed me, so I decided to contact Maxtoch and ordered the shorttube. Using it together with 2*18350 cells, it served me great.

However after reading that newer Maxtoch versions support single cell, just out of curiousity I just threw in a single 21700 in the shorttube and guess what?

It just works as it should!

(Did not measure Cd’s yet, so i cannot guarantee the same output)

Oh, that's really interesting to hear. I wonder what the runtime is, and how much it can maintain the output.

Thank you for sharing! Very helpful

I recently purchased the MAXTOCH L2KD, so I ventured to the old AFB closed down.

I had a friend stand at the end of a runway, it was 1.26 miles away, it was cloudy, and no moon.

He took a magazine with him, I told him to open the magazine, face his back at me.

I focused the beam on him and he stated that it lit him up like it was daytime.

Then of course that beam woke up the sleeping security guard, and we where kindly asked to leave, so we where unable to complete testing further.

On another note , at 1pm on a beautiful sunny day, 90 degrees outside I was wondering if I could see the beam on some pine trees about 100 yards away and to my amazement, you could.

The power of this LEP light is just insane.

It is even more fun bouncing the green and yellow beam off of the clouds at night.

I just purchased the K75, it has yet to arrive, but when it does, I want to set them both up on Tripods, find a nice target a mile away, and see if the L2KD beam can be seen through the end of the K75's beam shot. I know it's not serious testing by no means, just fun .

I bought the L2KD to see the active deer runs at night, and for that nothing comes close.
