That creep can roll man!
8-year-olds, dude.
I really need to watch that…
Edit: someone said/posted something earlier about the dialogue in movies (Dune specifically, but then a link to stuff about theater sound etc…)…
I feel like I mentioned this already…if so I apologize, but I’ve taken to watching everything with subtitles on because of tinnitus + random noises (wife + airplanes). Makes a HUGE difference.
I actually watched Dune at home first, then my friends (who’d been on vacation) came back and wanted to see it in the theater. Couldn’t make out half the dialogue, and also weirdly a lot of the scenes were way too dark to see (I remember a scene with the Harkonnen + The Duke, cutting to a Buffalo head on the wall, couldn’t see the Buffalo head…)
Oh, and if you watch South Park, you get to see what Kenny says…so I’ve been told…
I have some trouble understanding what some people say, so I watch everything with subtitles, if I can.
Most of the time, I understand what they say without the subtitles, but I enjoy reading along as well.
agree with azj and raccoon city….subtitles are great.
Dune, especially.
even the kids could not hear all the words.
yes, parents asking their child: “what did she say?”
- she said - this movie is boring. lol.

I don’t think Dune is geared towards kids lol
IMHO, the original Dune movie has taken on a different feeling over time. I appreciate it more, actually. There was a ton of artistic talent that went into making it. Yeah, it wasn’t always true to the book… and unfortunately, some of the CGI looks worse than 1957’s Forbidden Planet (which made heavy use of graphics over matte paintings), all the while the original Star Wars movie had come out 7 years prior and had vastly superior graphics. There are some real ‘dead spots’ where it moves slowly. But the casting was very good.
The new Dune movie is better than I’d expected. It’s going to be painful waiting for the sequel, though… since they split it up.

They split the book, but they didn’t film one movie and then split it; I can appreciate that. The amazing part that they made a Part I without having a green light for Part II. It was risky but it looks like it paid off since Part II is now green-lit.
The way The Hobbit was adapted though… The Hobbit is written at a lower reading level than LotR and is 95,356 words long and they made it into three movies. The Fellowship of the Ring is 187,790 words and it got one movie! I would be in favor of a longer adaption of Lord of the Rings some day. Maybe not a 6 movie series, but a 9 part miniseries could work.
The Expendables (2010) rewatch
Serviceable action schlock, just as I remembered. It’s surprisingly funny at times. The explosion effects are good and the action is fairly well-shot (not too much shaky cam, fight scenes have a sense of space, actual choreography). However, there are a couple of really bad CGI gore moments. For example, at one point a knife pierces someone from behind and it’s really obvious that the tip of the blade emerging from his chest is CGI.
The sound design for the action scenes was quite good on this movie. I’m sure it isn’t 100% realistic but it was impactful and no sounds were glaringly mismatched to the visuals. I saw the Monster Hunter movie last year and I no longer take that for granted.
Watched both of the Christmas Chronicles movies on Netflix — we had all four grandkids over this weekend — quite enjoyable — especially with the younger three that still believe
I saw Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City (2021).
This movie is bad.
I really wanted to like it, but instead I was disappointed.
The acting is bad.
The script is fairly bad.
The plot isn't that great.
The music is pretty good, though.
And the visuals are nice.
The movie isn't all that boring, but it's not entertaining either.
There are some creepy scenes and images.
This is the worst RE movie I've seen.
The six films by Paul W.S. Anderson are the best.
The three digitally animated movies are okay.
And this one is just bad.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings
Mrs. Jeff and I liked it.
Typical Marvel excellent CGI.
Plenty of action and a great way to waste an evening.
Popcorn required…
Monster Hunter
There’s 90m I won’t get back.
The fight scene between MJ and TJ goes on and on and on.
Nobody gets hurt from being tossed 10s of yards and stopped by rocks.
Monsters are bullet and RPG proof are injured by exploding arrows and swords.
Flying monster somehow can catch an AWACS that’s going what 400+ MPH?
Mostly the acting is OK but the whole is less than the sum of the parts.
Not even the popcorn helped.
All the Best,
Jeff

I agree with your take on Monster Hunter. What a mess. If anyone is interested, here is the review I left of it on Amazon:
Things just sort-of happen in this movie and nothing is explained. For those of you who don’t know, this is based on a video game series with a lot of established lore. The movie seems to assume you know all of the lore and doesn’t bother to introduce concepts properly. I am personally aware of the game series but have never played it. I do enjoy a good monster movie though, and I prize my Pacific Rim 4K Bluray.
Human Durability: I believe that the overall enhanced durability of the titular Monster Hunters is a result of the gear they use (weapons, armor) but this is never explained in the movie. You are left to wonder how humans are surviving events that should have broken every bone in their bodies.
Monster Durability: Swords can penetrate their hide and skulls, arrows penetrate their eyes but then blinking makes the arrow go away?! Meanwhile, 50 cal machine guns and other vehicle mounted modern weapons bounce off the same hide that can be penetrated by knife held by a human hand. There is probably a reason for this in the game series, but the movie doesn’t explain it. As a result, the scenes of attack choppers and and an AC-130 losing to a flesh and blood creature are laughable at best.
Sound Effects: They need to fire the sound effects team from this movie. The minigun mounted on a Humvee in this movie sounded like a much slower firing machinegun and it was also clear (thanks to a slow-motion shot) that the rate of fire was well below what it should have been. It’s very distracting if you have ever heard a minigun fire, even on Youtube. In general too, I just felt disconnected from what was happening on screen most of the time; I think one of the big reasons for this was really poor sound design that didn’t sell the things that were happening. Good sound makes a HUGE difference.
Plot: The plot is barely there. This might have been ok if time had been invested into character development instead. However, the writers decided to put a language barrier between the two leads so character development is stilted and superficial.
Casting: Casting was generally pretty good except for Ron Perlman. He looked so utterly out-of-place in this movie. I was impressed at how well Milla sold her role as an Army Ranger. It’s a shame that her work was undermined by poor writing which didn’t develop her character properly. (or any characters for that matter)
Weird Military Involvement: This movie has a cookie-cutter other-world plot involving a modern military unit. I suspect military funding helped get this film produced and that is why they went this route? But if that is the case, then why is the military unrealistically ineffective and why were the sound effects for weapons not better?
The Monster Hunting: Maybe it was a little too realistic in some respects? There is no sense of style to the human v monster fights. The humans get thrown around a lot and then barely manage to shove sharp objects into monsters and not get crushed. There’s no visual flair to these encounters. There’s also very little tension because if Milla dies then the film loses its lead and if her co-star dies, then she has no-one to play off of for most of the movie. Noone else is in the film long enough for their deaths to have any meaning.
The Ending: Seems like they just ran out of budget and stopped. The last shot in the film is a special effects shot of several monster hunters rushing towards a new wave of monsters, some of them with weapons we haven’t seen in the movie until that very moment. The ending reminded me a lot of the Red Dawn remake where it seems like the payoff is finally coming but then the movie ends.
So what is good about this movie? Well, the monsters look cool.
Stay away. Only good moments were flashbacks from 1999 Matrix.

True I tried hard to love it but it felt like a weak shadow of the original.
well, i have not seen it, however, those within my friends and family
who have agree with both sp5it and Trail Trek…not worth the time.
since i am still trying to “live down” Dune,
i will not make more recommendations.
I wish that Matrix 4 being a disappointment was a surprise. But then, we had Matrix 2 and 3 to prepare us for this.
Disclaimer: I don’t hate Matrix 2 & 3 but I acknowledge that they are flawed for a combination of reasons.
