LEP + LED flashlight: Lumintop Thor Pro [discussion + review]

Wow!
8x xhp50?! That is a lot of potential lumen in flood!

If they get into the Anduril 2-train on this, I’m hooked!
A properitairy UI could break this light.

The prototype has arrived! Charging some button tops now... I'll share initial impressions and info in a bit and a more thorough review soon. Let me know if you have any specific questions or things to test.

Wow!

UI and type of flood LEDs is interesting to know. Button tops only? No adapter plate for flats?

The LEP, like a Thor 3 or like an antman?…

I think I’ve worked out the UI. I’ve started a review with details on the second post LEP + LED flashlight: Lumintop Thor Pro [discussion + review] - #2 by dave1010

This one has XP-G3 LEDs but I’ve heard second hand that others may have XP-L or XHP50.2.

Yes to button tops only. There was no adaptor plate (like Convoy sell) in the box, though this is a pre-production prototype.

The LEP is somewhere between the Thor 3 and Ant man :-). I’ll take measurements later.

I’ve done some very quick and rough measurements. The XP-G3’s are hitting over 7000 lm and throw is around 500kcd (1400m). More details at the start of the thread.

The lens is glass!

The prototype is Lumintop’s own UI, which seems to work well. At least it’s not hold for off

That’s what I thought too. You have to unscrew the tail cap to get to the ports, which are on the main body tube.

I’m not saying this is an ugly light per se, well maybe I am a little. But it does strike me as uninspired when compared to all the bolder and pretty slick looking bigger lights we’ve seen released lately. Seems interesting for sure, but the emitter options also seem to be uninspired considering they’re only looking to pump 7000 lumen. Not necessarily a huge fan of the LH351D’s or 219C, but I think those would be a great option for one of these. 4000k especially, regardless if there is a slight loss of output. Or maybe even the 219F Acebeam is using in the Rider RX.

I guess I’m just looking for ways to make this light more appealing, because right now it’s appealing to me, but not really.

To clarify, the 7000 lm was from 8A cells, so it may do more with high drain ones.

I should be getting some high drain cells early next week to test with.

I recorded 2 quick videos of the Lumintop Thor Pro:

I’ve also added a few more photos that Neal sent to the first post.

thank you dabe1010 Fantastic !! I’m looking forward to the release of the light.

Can we get some rough measurements? How wide is the bezel?

That seems to me to be a crucial/very interesting bit of info for a light like this. The whole point/advantage of an LEP is that you get the same throw with something like the 40mm bezel of the thor 2 as you get with the 72mm bezel of the Noctigon K1 W1.

So putting an LEP module in the middle of a floodlight should mean it’s able to be smaller than competitors like the Fenix LR40R and Olight Marauder 2, while also throwing MUCH further. The Fenix and Olight both have ~80mm bezels, and in my mind for this to be a truly neat competitor, it should have closer to a ~65mm bezel.

The XP-G3 is a bit of a weird choice. XP-L HI or HD would definitely be better. 8x XHP50.2 or 8x SFT-40 would be truly awesome, and could put up super compelling flood numbers along with that sweet 1400m of LEP throw.

Here’s what the prototype measures:

  • Head diameter 67.0mm
  • Body diameter 51.1mm
  • Length 157mm

Rough numbers for the optic diameters:

  • LED 15mm
  • LEP 26mm

Weights

  • Without cells 644g
  • With cells 830g

I want this light! Ideally it would use 3 or 4 21700’s (no 18650’s ever again please, 21700’s are so much better and only slightly larger).

I think the options should be sft40 and xhp50, not xpg3 or xpl

Thanks for the measurements, dave1010!

That’s a bit long (26mm longer), but otherwise pretty similar dimensions to the Lumintop GT3. Certainly much more compact than competitors. Quite heavy though.

10k+ lumens and 1400m throw in something pretty close to jacket-pocketable (if my GT3 is anything to go by) seems like it could be a really compelling light!

Another interesting competitor/comparison to this light will be actually carrying 2 lights. Like, you could carry a Emisar D18, and Lumintops own thor 1 or 2, and it would probably be less weight, and possibly less bulk than this light. Of course you don’t have both available at the same time like you do with this.

The LEP to LED optic ratio seems off.

The floody LED optics should be smaller and the LEP larger, imo

Thats my opinion,too

Regards Xandre

Yeah, I agree.

I think more like the proportions of this Fenix would be good.

If it was more like the Acebeam X80-GT or Manker MK34 II with lots of floody XHP50.2 LEDs with a LEP diameter more like the Thor II (or even bigger) then it could get more flood and throw.

It’d be less balanced though. Another possibility is having throwy LEDs (W2 or SFT40), so the switch from LED to LEP is less significant.

W2 and SST20W for the ‘flood’ emitters, maybe 12 of them, and smaller optics. ~45mm optic for the LEP. Specs would be much more impressive in my estimation.

Do you mean combining W2 and SST20 or triple channel?

It would be cool to switch between

  • High CRI warm flood light
  • Throw LED
  • LEP

Though that’d make 6 combinations if you could use them in pairs, which would be a complex UI.

No. Dual channel. Just giving the emitter options. High lumen or high cri, but both options giving best cd/lm in their class
