Convoy S2+ Mod - Osram Cslnm1 - 5 Degree Tir - Fet driver - 430m throw

Hello Guys! Want to share this new S2+ build with you.
I’ve used a BLF A6 DD fet driver,and a 18650 tube.

For the led I’ve opted for the Osram CSLNM1 also know as white flat 1mm2 and put a 5 degree TIR from Simon (Convoy) store.
The objective of this build was to get the most focused and throwiest beam i could get,without too much effort. :money_mouth_face:
So it begins,removed the old sst40 that I’ve put in the pill,and soldered a new mcpcb from Convoy store with the w1 soldered.

Noticed a strange soldering of the led,but that’s what I have for now, don’t want to kill the led trying to reflow it,I don’t know how to do it without killing the emitter (i’ve done it only one time and it went bad so didn’t want to risk) :zipper_mouth_face:

Simon it’s so kind he will send me a new one later,and I will see if it perform better.
After a bit of thinkering I set up first the light with smooth reflector and got 360m throw at 4,3 meters of distance (33280cd) with a fully charged molicell p26a
Removed the optics and inserted the TIR, tried without glass but it was forcing on the outside of the TIR and it was crackling noise while I was tightening the pill so I’ve stopped and inserted the glass again in front of the TIR. :person_facepalming:
I’ve tried the light with the 3030 circular gasket under the TIR but the beam was very weird and unpleasant (maybe for the led slanted soldering? Don’t know)
Removed the gasket and reassembled the light again and boom, 46225 candelas (430 meters throw).All this results have been checked trying different reflector and TIR focus.

Those are the beam shape with smooth reflector first and TIR on the bottom photo.Strange the TIR looks like a larger beam,you will think the narrow beam had better throw,but in this case it isn’t,the focus is the best I get after some back and forth trying to center it at the best,BUT I want to test the new led when it arrive,m to check if the strange soldering isn’t screwing the test :person_facepalming:


For now,I’m very pleased with this light,the beam is super focused and don’t look strange like with the gasket around the led

Here’s some night shoot excuse me if it’s low quality,I’ve got just one high quality as a bonus

The last line of three is over 300 meters,photo represent almost what you see with naked eye.Didn’t check amps at the tail,but the springs are both bypassed and I’ve used 20 awg wires for led cables.Maybe it’s a little bit angry blue,but not too much,the photo overexagerate it.Will try to check the amps,for now using lower drain battery lowers the output,maybe I’m not getting over the top with amps,don’t know,but based on test here a 5 or max 6A driver from Convoy it’s good.
Threes before the last line are like 200 meters.This maybe isn’t the best S2+ mod you will see,but at least I’ve thinkered a bit with the 5 degree TIR Simon is offering,for me, this makes a very throwy light,I want to do another one just for fun :partying_face:

Nice build. My S21A with an Osram flat was the first indication that a medium thrower doesn’t have to have a huge reflector. An S2+ is even cooler.

Maybe Simon will start making something like this. I like the TIR.

Direct drive on this emitter is likely tooo much current. 5A Convoy driver is perfect for the NM1

Hey, first post here at BLF. Thank you for posting this. I've read multiple times that the narrow and non-frosted TIRs don't have a good beam quality in the S2+ with an osram, but I think this looks really good! 430m is very impressive out of an S2+!

Awesome info, thanks! A throwier S2+ is something I have thought about quite a lot as well. This combo looks like a winner!

I still suggest to you all to try the YD5050 emitter with the ’ center sand ’ xml 5° optic. Smooth, zero artifacts, 45kcd, over 1000 lumens.

Looks like a tiny hotspot with a huge corona, whereas the reflector has a larger, more diffused hotspot but less corona? That probably explains the larger beam but higher candela rating.

More light where you’re aiming, less light and more diffused light at your peripherals. That’s what makes TIRs cool for throwers.

I think that too,the initial idea was to use the 18350 tube,so the current will be limited,but then I’ve seen that with the p26a the throw was even further.I Will do another one with the 5A driver,even if It push a Little less throw I will have a regulated driver,much better!
I’m waiting for the YD,will do a comparison when ready :money_mouth_face:

I had the fear that this was the case at first start with the gasket on,usually there are a lot of artifacts,instead this is so clean that I don’t touch It anymore and I will do another one with 5A driver and another with Yinding led to see what happen :smiley:

Agreed, NM1 on FET will let you `see` its piss*d off. Got me chuckling.

That 5A is no longer perfect since it was altered to now be 5.5-5.7A

Did you remove the reflector or is the TIR sitting inside?

Maxchaos92, is the lens you used the standard 5 degree TIR sold on the Convoy AE store? I'm looking forward to your tests with the 5A driver, please post here with your results.

I assembled a similar build with reflector. I recall having to thin the gasket to get a nice, tight hotspot in the smooth reflector. Mine has the ring on the periphery as well, which I find annoying.

I’ll have to try the TIR. That looks great!

Didn’t try to do reflector+Tir, Will see later if It fits, for now it’s only TIR directly on the led.

Yes It is! Already ordered the 5A driver,and another s2+ so I can test together and see what works better :smiley:

Thanks for this info. I think I heard this reported elsewhere that the current has been climbing with successive batches. I didn’t know it’s gotten that high.

My original run of red 5A drivers push right around 4.3A.

Maybe these new ones will need a sense resistor mod to bring the current down a bit.

I replaced my smooth reflector with a TIR. I think it’s 5 degrees, might be 10 (I ordered a mix of 5, 10, and 15 and they came in unmarked packaging :person_facepalming: ).

I spent about 45 min trying to get a good focus. I ended up using a gasket, the bowtie kind, with one layer of electrical tape to raise it up a hair. I’d measure it but now that it’s focused I’m too afraid to take it apart.

There’s a slightly dark donut hole around the hotspot, but the hotspot is very clean aside from faint flower petals. It’s very throwy but unfortunately I don’t have a lux meter to confirm. I do like it. Thanks for the inspriation, maxchaos92.

I’m expecting some YD5050s to arrive any day now. Looking forward to trying those.

That’s my fear too,so I’m building a new one,my hotspot is similar to yours with a Little dark spot at closer distance,this is what throw the most from what I’ve tested in mine.My tir have a clear ring under the convex shape that I think work wonders as a spacer,with a spacer under the tir,the led is really far from the tir and don’t work nor looks good :expressionless:
