LEP + LED flashlight: Lumintop Thor Pro [discussion + review]

No, not magnetic.

Here’s a picture of them

This looks like an awesome light but with two separate light sources, I would expect to control them using two separate switches. Going through multiple click hoops to get what you want seems really cumbersome. The Fenix LR40R got it right in this regard.

I think anduril2 works great, without more buttons.

2 independent switches would help in some ways but hinder in others. For example going to turbo on both channels would require 2 double clicks.

The Thor Pro UI is good but there’s not a good way to jump to turbo on both channels quickly if you’re just using the LEDs.

Ideally the UI would let you have the LEDs on low or medium then quickly switch to LED+LEP on turbo for a bit, then back to just LED.

LUMINTOP has a troublesome UI, so I hope it will be a simple and effective UI.

There’s a video of the prototype’s UI in the second post, if you missed it.

I have their D1, which uses their own hold-to-turn-off UI. The driver is good but I’m not keen on the UI. I also have their tint-ramping FW4X, which I didn’t really like the UI of as it had a separate config mode to change the channels. I was concerned that they’d use the FW4X’s UI here but they haven’t.

The final version may be different though.

Here's the Thor Pro prototype's turbo output visualised against the Lumintop GT70, which has similar lumen and candela numbers but is a few times the size and weight:

Please excuse my crude drawing!

That is actually a very good way of illustrating beam characteristics!

Mr.dave1010 thank you!!

Independent channels would much better.

I don’t mind the UI - as long as I can flash my own firmware.
Is the MCU of the driver an Attiny variant?

Neal now has the light up for pre order!

It has a screen on the bottom now which is cool but not super useful. $400 is way out of my price range, I was hoping for something close to $200 with the group buy price (still no idea what that price will be). It also says its 4x 18650. If that is the case then I’m no longer interested. 18650’s are not for me, 21700’s are the way to go.

Says the guy who claims 1400km of throw:

I removed the retaining ring but the driver board won’t budge while it’s still connected to the MCPCB. The wires seem to be very short.

I’m not confident enough that I can solder it back together in 1 piece and without damaging the LEP module if I took it all apart.

Here’s a shot of under the reflector.

Interesting how it says Osram P8.

One button is too hard to remember all those modes, I would like to see two buttons that are easy to access by feel within a split second.

dave1010 I mentioned your review in my video here. I appreciate what you bring to the forum, and I like the drawing of the beam shapes that you made. A Laser/LED Hybrid Light

Thanks Matt. Great review!

Reassuring that we both got similar lumen numbers. I’m guessing the XP-G3 prototype underperforms the specs.

Neal has said that the production one will be XP-L HD, so hopefully the numbers on his site are right for that.

dang I just ordered one :person_facepalming: . I told myself I wouldn’t get this one because I only want 21700 lights moving forward but the combo of LEP + LEDs is just too irresistible lol

Jackson modded my Thor Pro to have the Nichia SM573 dedomed. How do you like it so far Dave?
