I do find this a great product: mixing the LEP for spot and LED’s for flood. However, the current XP-L2 HD LED on Thor Pro is not quite bright enough for flood purpose and I was wondering if there’s a way to squeeze eight or so XHP70.2 together w/ LEP to make a great hybrid light w/ 40k+ lumen flood AND 1300m+ throw (430k cd +) spot light? This would be a absolute killer!
I agree it would be cool, but I can see why they didn’t. Doing so would dramatically increase both the size and especially the price of the light. Lights that have 8x XHP70.2 (Manker MK38, Acebeam X50, Imalent MR90, Imalent MS08) Are all larger and already hover around or well above the price of the Thor pro. Add a LEP module to those and you’d be looking at a $500-600+ light. The$300-400 price of the thor pro is already very steep for most people.
It could also be an issue with heat. As it is, the Thor pro is kind of a hot rod and can’t sustain it’s ~13,000lm turbo for more than 30 seconds before getting very hot and hitting a hard stepdown, so even adding XHP50.2s to it might make turbo performance worse overall - it would have higher brightness at startup, but would step down even sooner. I’m also not sure but there’s possibly an issue with too much heat affecting the LEPs performance as well.
But I do think the light isn’t super compelling. I could carry an Emisar D18 which has similar flood performance and high CRI (or other flooder), along with a Lumintop Thor 1 or Mateminco FW2, and I’d have less overall bulk to carry, and still be ~$100-200 less than the price of the Thor Pro.
Though of course there is some advantage and value to having two lights in one, it’s just a big jump in cost to achieve that. Still I have to appreciate Lumintop trying something different and putting together a product no one else has, and doing it with good quality at a reasonable price (on sale) for what it is.
