Convoy T4

So, while I’m waiting for the MAO version to come out, is there a clear-cut best emitter for this light (especially high CRI versions from 4500K to 5000K? Floody lights (or lights that I can make a bit floody with DC-fix) with that CCT range and 90+ CRI seems to be my jam.)

Emitter choices are shown here across the bottom: Convoy T4 emitter choices - Album on Imgur

I like the 5000K LH351Ds in my Sofirn SP36. I know that the 219B 4500K is well-regarded by many, but is a bit rosy-tinted and dimmer than the rest. The newer 519A 4500K is supposed to be really good as well, but I don’t have any lights with it yet, so I can’t compare.

Which would you (or did you) get?

I’d get the 4000k SST-20, since small lights like these need the most throw possible.

MAO T4 is ready ,
But there has been a delay in the production of the flashlight gift box, and it will take another week.

I have the LH351D 5000K and really like it. The beam is pretty neutral, and the green AR coated lens definitely reduces the typical greenish hue of this emitter. When compared side by side with my SP10 PRO with the same die, the T4 hotspot appears to be much closer to bbl.

Looking forward to it!

For floody high CRI between 4500-5000K, get the 519A 5000K. High CCT 519As tend to be 300K warmer than rated, so you’d expect around 4700K in practice. The higher R9 and better tint will make you want to toss the LH351D in the bin. Although rated at 90CRI, 519As seem to be consistently above 95 and average 97+.

Thank you for the info, guys. I might have to get one of each!

is there any news about MAO T4?

any plans for a UV version? would be nice to get one with Nichia UV led in there

I got both a 519A 4500K and a LH351D 5000K Convoy S2+ in the mail yesterday, and you’re right. The LH351D looks downright unpleasant and green when you put them side by side, and anything with red/brown in it looks much better with the 519A.

However, any light is useful when you need to shoo the darkness away, so it’s not a utility issue, just a cosmetic/user experience issue. I’ll probably be putting this one into storage or giving it away.

Now I’m wondering how good the SP36 would be if they put 519A or some other emitter in there instead of the LH351D.

https://aliexpress.com/item/1005003937912964.html got grey 2700k lh351d version.

well packaged and built like a tank but interface is new to me.

aliexpress page says:

turn flashlight on -> do short clicks till it turns off to under configuration mode -> it starts buzzing (wait through it) -> it flash twice and go through buzz again (do a short click here)

but it does not seem to be able to toggle memory mode on/off. maybe i am doing something wrong?

if i turn flashlight off and then on - it cycle through the presets. like 1st group with 1%/10%/30%/100% - if i turn flashlight on 1% and then turn it off - it starts from 10. and if i turn it off on 10 - it starts from 30% and etc

and i have found that if i do short tap before turning flashlight on - it starts from the first preset like 1% in 1st group. maybe i can turn that make it start from the first preset and/or atleast make it stop cycling through presets when you turn it off?

Shoot. I should have ordered 4000K then, because I really like my E21A 3500K, and my other 3000K will look like 2700K instead, too warm for general use for me.

T3 and T4 just came with 519A 3500K and 3000K.

Their CCTs don't appear lower than nominal.

T3 orange is glossier. T4 orange is more matte and a bit darker.

Protected cell in T3 is a tight fit due to stiff/long srping. 2 protected cells in the T4 will also be a tight fit.

T4 can use anti-roll flats on head.

Thanks for letting us know. I have been thinking about a T3 and T4 orange combo to match my hi-viz work gear  . Kind of a bummer that the oranges don’t exactly match each other.

As mentioned before, the lower-than nominal CCT appears to only occur with high CCT 519A's, I'd say 4500K and above. (I haven't seen any data on the 4000k.) Not exactly sure why this happens.

My conjecture is that reflectors/optics blend the warmer sideways emission into the hotspot and shifts the color a bit along the BBL. A shift of constant distance along the BBL is known to affect CCT much more at the higher end; for an extreme example, even a tiny shift can move the T=infinity point to a finite-CCT point, resulting in an arbitrarily large drop in CCT.

It’s finally ready!

I really hope that the MAO light gray finish eventually finds its way to the S21A as well. That would look fantastic!

Simon: any updates on a version of the T4 that can use alkaline, NiMH, primary lithiums and 3.7v? It seems there are not many 2AA lights that can take all four chemistries/ voltages. I’d definitely be interested in a couple for backcountry use.

i got new driver , But since I still have some old drivers left, the update will take a while.

If you need T4 with new driver, pls note your requirement in the remarks of your order

What are the details on the new driver? Does it support all AA types and 14500 or was there some compromise made? Still 12 groups?

Yes, they are all compatible.

Just got a T4 519A 4500K and loving it. I just got back from a 6 year cold turkey of flashlights and whew was this a delight. My old lights were all on the cool side and I think I had only 1 neutral white light before. I’m planning to get another T4 but I was wondering if the SST-20 6500k / SST-20 5000k also have good tint? I dislike greens but any thing rosy is fine.
