List of spectrometers: to measure CRI, etc

Xrite i1 studio , Colormunki photo , i1 pro.

Used with ArgyllCMS (free, Windows, Linux, Mac, command line) (there are other supported spectrophotometers listed but I’m not sure how common they are), ArgyllCMS pro (100$, Android), or Babelcolor CT&A (125$, Windows, mac, only i1 pro).

I have a i1 studio, paid 350€ new, but they are discontinued now, like the Colormunki Photo, the other day one went for 101€ + 20€ shipping from Italy on Ebay . They are more common on the US second hand market, Here is one for 150$ .
Maukka uses an i1 pro with CT&A, recognisable from the screenshots.

Xrite seems to be rebranded to Calibrite.

Will add it to the list

XRite first, then merged with Calibrite in 2021, I think.

Only for the i1 display (colorimeter) and studio (spectrophotometer) apparently. I didn’t mention it because the price is significantly higher for what is likely exactly the same thing.

Colormunki Photo , because there is the Colormunki display which is a colorimeter.

I have been on the look for an Xrite as well, when I saw that they were named Calibrite..

I hope to add more to the list.. so people can easier find them online, second hand for example

Asensetek is still going AFAIK. They are available for purchase on alliedscientificpro.com, and their app is still being updated. I’ve had one for years and love it. Smaller than a deck of cards, it fits easily in my laptop bag, so it’s always on hand. You’d be surprised how often a quick read of a light source comes in handy.

Have you got this working? The i1Studio isn’t in the list of supported devices, and last time I tried the demo it didn’t recognize it.

Gossen Mavospec Base and Mavospec Lite.

I believe the munki is discontinued as is that version of the studio.
Here’s what they currently offer.

All the Best,
Jeff

No that’s why I mentioned only i1 pro.

I love that it’s even specifically in the part I quoted :person_facepalming:

Are you sure about that? Asensetek doesn't have a website anymore..

Thanks @bob mcbob

I’m not sure they ever did — I bought through Allied Scientific. I can confirm that their SpectrumGenius cloud service is alive and well.

Well, their documentation mentions the website, but if I go there, it's gone. Other websites mentioning Asensetek also link to that same website...

I hope I'm wrong though..

I hope so too! It’s a great product. My guess (hope) is that they were acquired and that result in website changes. But I can’t find anything about it online one way or the other.

I think the new company name is Spectrum Genius? https://spectrumgenius.com/website/about-us

If you look at their (Spectrum genius) address details, they are named Asensetek Canada Inc, and interestingly enough, their email is from alliedscientificpro.com.

Also, here is a mention from 2019, that Asensetek might have gone broke: https://ledgardener.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4105

Edit:

Update:

I just reached out to them, and yes, these are (again) still in business, so less worry.

Found a few more, named GL Spectrolux

https://gloptic.com/products/gl-spectrolux/

The website mentions: Budget-Friendly.. but they cost north of $3000 lol

And the ThunderOptics spectrometer.. A device of only $114

But not 100% sure it can measure CRI.. but that's not 100% clear

Hi everyone,

First time posting here but I’m wondering if anyone would be able to help. I’ve seen some documentation here where some people are using a ColorMunki Photo, some people are using an i1Pro, and some people are using CT&A.

I would like to buy the equipment needed to perform some measurements on various LED light sources I have acquired.

I’ve found the following:
Colormunki Photo is available used for about 150 USD on eBay or so. Seems to work with Argyll CMS and this GitHub which seems to process the files.
i1Pro v1 (can also get a EFI E2000 which appears to be the same thing for 170USD) seems very old and appears to be supported by CT&A, which has a free version but I’m not sure if that is sufficient to generate the reports I see here; unknown if EFI version can be used with CT&A;
i1Pro v2 seems to extend the measurement brightness range of V1. More expensive.

I’m wondering what would be the minimum viable way to acquire these and perhaps an integrating sphere for <500 USD. Bonus if it would work for calibrating monitors as well.

Would anyone have some recommendations for where to start?

Thanks!

Welcome on BLF !

Does anyone own this thing and can say something about it?

Edit: I’ve contacted the manufacturer and asked a few questions/requested the manual. Here’s the answer in my words:

  • the device needs to be calibrated and is not very precise

  • data cannot be exported (though I saw a video in which someone did exactly this).
