Looking for a couple of new lights.

Ive been out of the flashlight market for a couple of years now and I am currently looking for two new lights. Looking for one to be an EDC for various general tasks, but I would like it to have a moonlight option, memory and replaceable (non proprietary battery). The second light I am looking for could possibly be the same as the first but most likely not. I like to take walks at night, some times on trails. Recently while walking, I was bitten by a neighbors dog. It was a pretty bad bite but luckily I was earring jean and was able to get him off of me without shooting it. Not sure if a super bright light or strobe would have deterred him or not but that is what I am looking for. A general bright it’s to see of in the distance when I hear something and possible he a deterrent. Always have other options with me as well as a last resort. Anyway, the more I research the more confusing it gets. There are so many good options out there now. These are what I have found so far. Any suggestions from the list or something I am missing.

I usually carry a Convoy S2 or S2+ as my EDC. Small enough to slip into my pocket and has all the features you’re asking for. Also they’re cheap enough so that it’s not a big deal if lost or appropriate by a friend or kid.

In my experience animals aren’t deterred by strobes or bright lights so I wouldn’t depend on one to do so, unless it was mounted on a rail

Did the dog’s owners make good on your injury? Hopefully you reported it to the authorities in case this has happened before or does happen again.

I’m surprised you didn’t shoot it since you said it was a bad bite. That leads me to believe that it was large and capable of doing serious damage.

There seems to be a wide range in the lights you listed; I don’t have experience with all, but I do have some.

I have a TN12 Pro, and I don’t find it’s strobe or brightness very disorienting; for dual-switch, I like the Ditac D2 (1-touch strobe), if any are still around, or a cheap Klarus.

I also have a Convoy M21, but in my case, it has a very warm LED (GTFC40, so again, not very disorienting, but with other LEDs, maybe it could be.

I have a Sofirn IF25a, which has sufficient brightness in a small package, and I think the IF22a would be more focused and effective.

My favorite from your list would be the Acebeam E70, but I don’t actually own one yet.

I usually EDC an Astrolux EA01S as my backup; it’s not a pretty beam, but it’s cheap, has quick strobe if you want, has a variety of tube/battery sizes, and a wide range of (very floody) lumens.

Actually the owner just said sorry. He lives next door to me. I did file a report with animal control. The dog is a mixed breed and about 60 lbs. I did not need stitches but my leg was bleeding and the whole leg was black and blue. It was close. Shooting it ran through my head but I grabbed my pocket knife and punch it in the head with the blunt end of my fist/knife several times and he finally released. He didnt make a sound other than is grunting while biting me. If it happens again, it will be the .45.

I have an S2 but I am not crazy about my clip. Keeps popping off. Will have to look into the screw in type.

Do you want to stick with single-emitter lights? There are some really great triples and quads now. Since you listed the C8L I’d give a look at the triple C8F as well. Smaller and with a 21700 is the WildTrail WT3M (or the single WT1M) if those are still available (I think Amazon is still out but that may change…aliexpress still had some last I looked). Absolutely worth looking at Hank’s Nocticon and Emisar models, too….and recently he introduced boost drivers for several of his lights, if you want less heat and more consistent output over the run time (a bit brighter moon and a bit less from the top end, though). Convoy has the S12 and S21D also (18650 and 21700, respectively).

Glad you’re ok with the bite. Those can be really bad news if they get you in the right spot and start to thrash. Flesh and muscle heals ok but if you end up with nerve or tendon/ligament damage those can last a lifetime. Any chance you can make friends with the dog? Familiar voice and saying its name might prevent round two.

I would second the WT3M, depending how good you are at finding the button when needed. I have one, but it’s so compact I have trouble sometimes… But I also have neuropathy which adds to the challenge. I have a WT1M also and likely will put it on my catch and release list; it’s high quality but just too similar to others I have.

I have a clip on my S2 that bolts onto the lanyard holes. It works pretty well and lets the light sit way lower into my pants pocket. I think I bought it from FastTech years ago.

Do they make that Wild Trail WT3M in a non Androol version?

IF22A for distance. Keep it set to midrange, so you have press’n’hold for moonlight, regular click for the preset value, and doubleclick for turbo. 3 beam strengths instantly available at any time. Tight beam for distance, lotta oomf.

EDC light, just save yourself the ag and get all of them, pick what features you like best and stick with the one(s) you like best.

Yeah, if you want a budget thrower, get a flashlight with a single SFT40 emitter like the Sofirn IF22/IF22A.

They're amazing.

Sofirn SP35 is my EDC. Has both a good throw and spread, USB-C charging, 21700 battery and family friendly UI

For a good thrower under $50, there are quite a few to choose from. Typically only have experience with Convoy, Sofirn or the Asralus FT03……and depends if you want some spread as well as throw or mainly throw.

SP35 looks great and I like the price. Was leaning toward the Fenix PD35 V3 but this looks just as good for 1/3 less.

The SC21 Pro is on sale for $19 on Aliex

I recently learned that a cheap $10 stun gun will scare dogs away, from the sound, not from actually using it on them…:
