Are you calling me a Liar ???

@Boaz

Without having a transcript of a recent example of such a conversation turning confrontational, I certainly wouldn't be able to judge whether the other person was justified or not in asking such questions!

It's certainly possible that the other person feels the very same way with the same question(s) and concern(s), possibly even posting a similar thread elsewhere.

Boaz in Greece you would be known as a
ψεύτης.

LOL

Hmm...

"Thou shalt not lie" translates to...

δεν θα πεις ψέματα

But when that is translated back to English, it comes back as "you will not lie"

The Greek language does not translate word for word to English. At least most of the time it doesn’t.

Yeah, it's the same way with other languages as well.

Maybe it's just a poor choice of words. To me lying involves some intent either to deceive or obfuscate.

Clearly people dislike being told they might be wrong. Some more than others.

In this highly polarized world, we're living in it's probably best to do what Clint Eastwood so eloquently suggested before it all blows up in our faces .

When I hear the question "Are you calling me a liar?"

I think of the person asking the question as a drama queen because they sound like they're just trying to stir up s***.

...

I don't consider kidding around to be lying, though technically it is.

I agree that "lying to deceive or obfuscate" is a real problem.

A few years back I bought a t-shirt for a friend….

“I’m not arguing with you, I’m just trying to explain to you why you are wrong”

Done in jest but it became his favourite.

Newbies in the group just plain suck, not all of them, but most.

that has only happened twice to me,
well, that i remember, anyway.

specifically, “are you calling me a liar?”
(not anything else or word salad)

1. my answer was yes.
2. still yes.

“Tell the truth and . . .run!”
Old Croatian proverb

Calling you a liar is one thing,……………Now, if they call you a George Santos? WOAH, that’s some serious diss

OH MY GOSH someone on the INTERNET told a LIE!!!

Wait till you meet internet trolls. Just take everything with a grain of sand and try to have fun.

Would you believe I’ve always used alias that I change periodically whilst online. Does that count as a lie? Why does every site what my name, mobile number, date of birth, email? Life is a lot more simple if you are just a nobody online. But I digress.

“And he asked him, What is thy name? And he answered, saying, My name is Legion: for we are many.”

“And he asked him, What is thy name? And he answered, saying, My name is Google: for we are many.”

Google vs. Googol

The verb google and the noun googol are commonly confused because they have similar pronunciations. Google is the word that is more common to us now, and so it is sometimes mistakenly used as a noun to refer to the number 10100. That number is a googol, so named by Milton Sirotta, the nephew of the American mathematician Edward Kasner, who was working with large numbers like 10100. Google, on the other hand, is the name of a search engine as well as a verb that refers to searching the Internet using the Google search engine. (The search engine’s name was inspired by the number: the founders of Google chose the name to reflect their mission “to organize a seemingly infinite amount of information on the web.”) You can remember that the number is spelled googol by remembering that a googol has lots of o’s.

sure it's probably just a coincidence

I never argue. I just explain why I’m right.

„The one who speaks the truth needs a fast horse.“ (Chinese proverb)

I heard this on TV in reference to George Santos:

How much do you have to lie to be known as "the lying congressman"?

This is just one example for a straw man argument. The person using it is really saying: “I don’t care for your opinion.”

Assuming it’s a discussion with reasonable people (not hardcore right-wingers or anti-science types) …. It depends how you phrase the discussion. Nobody likes to be told they’re wrong. I’ll often lead the sentence with “in my mind….”, Or “for me…” or “do you not think XYZ….?” which takes the conflict out of the conversation.

Not a liar, just alternative facts.
