Pros:

  • Nice finish and no visual imperfections
  • Very well built
  • Thick walled
  • Driven well
  • Nice deep and thick SMO aluminium reflector
  • 2 modes, no strobes
  • Very decent heatsinking capabilities
  • Decent orings in the usual places
  • Good threads
  • Reasonably clean when arrived
  • Price

Cons:

  • Threads not lubed or on subatomic level.
  • The low mode is a very inefficient resitor based switch setup in tailcap
  • The head is glued to the body (pill accessible with pointy tweezers from the head)
  • Must be pressed twice from high to turn off
  • Lens are plain and for such light multicoated AR lens should be stock

Features / Value: ★★

It is well built. It has nice heatsinking capabilities and the only build quality negative is the body glued to the head. Thats the -1 star along with the very inefficient implementation of the low mode. More on that later.

Design / Build Quality: ★★★★

For a thrower it is very well built. All the qualities one would seek in such a flashlight. The strong point is obviously the long smooth aluminium reflector with no visible imperfections.

The body is hard glued to the head. Tried to disassemble it with my own strenght but the glue was way stronger then me. Decided it isn't worth the possibility of damaging it to take apart.

The resistor switch is however something new to me. I would say that such implementation is a very Flinstones approach. In this times it should be driver based. Would have preferred it came single mode.

The good news is that i see no reason a generic switch from a p60 host would not fit as a direct replacement but i have not tried it yet. UPDATE: I swapped sucessfuly the switch with a "normal" one usually found in p60 hosts. I have disassembled the switch but forgot to took a pic.

Threads are above average but nothing outstanding.

Battery Life: ★★★★★

Did not try to do a runtime but should be pretty decent on a good 18650. Current draw at tailcap with a fresh 18650 is 1170mA and decently steady for a period of 2 min. I suspect it does not use a linear regulator and will sag with time as most budget lights do. That said it should do at least 2,5h easily but the brightness will drop with time. That with a decent 2600mAh cell.

Light Output: ★★★★★

It is a thrower, it throws far with as little side spill. The spill is present but very faint. The hostspot at 1m is few cm. The range is 350m and over depending of what you define still acceptable lighting. I was able to light up a bit a house on a hill which would be around 600-750m away but just very faintly, almost unnoticeable. Taking pictures ov beamshots is a hard task for my camera but i tried. :/

Update:

I measured lux at exactly 1m distance from the UF HS-801. 31900-32100 lux in 5 to 6 attempts. All done after around 10 seconds on high. Have still to assess my luxmeter reliability as the result seems high but due to percieved output it could be just right.

Dealer Experience: ★★★★

Buyincoins shipped it in 4 days after order was placed. No tracking number unless you pay for it. Traveled exactly 30 days, where the usual is 14-20 from other HK based competitors. Their website design is not that great, often infected with malware and very unpleasant to navigate. The flashlight was however packaged in several layers of bubble wrap. Very neat. I sent them a message a few times and got a decent reply in a day. Apart from a long wait time nothing wrong or suspicious.

Summary: ★★★★

Good value at price point under 20USD (barely). It does beat the lunapower MRV by a decent margin but let's not forget the MRV is a little better built and no "fancy" switch. This is also longer compared to the MRV and has a narrower beam. Pencil beam thrower sounds about right. Pretty satisified with it and will be a nice addition to my collection. Highly reccomended if youre shopping for a thrower.

Thanks for the review. I have an 802 which is essentially the same light down to the resistored switch. This used to be a common way of doing things.

I did manage to defeat the glue in the end. After breaking a vice, boiling the light and baking it in an oven.

The glue they use is very, very tough stuff.

Nice review. That's the reason why I love KD version. More robust and fully disassemblable.

KD version on the top...

Thanks for the detailed review and nice pictures Budgeteer! Frontpage'd and Sticky'd.

That's some impressive glue they are using. I want some of it!

I apologize fot he dust in pictures. The camera picks what i cannot see easily.

I liked the 801 more than the 802. The 802 looks very rough, very plumbing style which i don't like much. Im more toward minimalistic design or very elegant lines. I like also the agressive approach but often they do exaggerate. The famous Skyray p60 host is one of those fancy space designs i do like.

The estward J something XM-L based from DX Don revieved in the last days is currently one of my aesthetically favorite designs. Top 5 for sure.

J06. It is a pretty light. I'll need to get outdoors to somewhere with a longer line of sight to do some testing. I'm really impressed with Kokopelli's beamshots on the XM-L shootout thread and would like to try to do some like that with my lights. Time to travel this weekend to somewhere with plenty of quality darkness.

It caused me to go out and buy one.. Great review

Little update: The switch can be easily replaced with a generic found in p60 hosts usually.

I believe the 801 is a little smaller than the 802. Also could you post a link to the tailcap you mentioned. Thanks

Actually i disassembled the tailcap and removed the stock switch. Replaced with one form a random p60 hosts i ha ve- Looks like this.

Is the 802 Brighter than the 801?

Seems to be the same driver and reflector so any differences would be minimal.

Does anyone know a part number for a pressure pad? Thanks for the info

Aloha and welcome to BLF Preda8or!

Pardon my ignorance, but does that mean it’s single mode only now?
I have an HS-802, which I believe is pretty much identical. From what I’ve seen, the low mode via the transistor is very inefficient. I really want at least 2 modes, and would like to improve runtime on low mode, so am wondering what the easiest option is for a noob to achieve that?
TIA

Only a driver swap can do it efficiently. Use the AK-47 from kd and disable unwanted modes. In the diy section is the driver reviewed. Cant really help much atm since im typing this from a phone. :)

Dang. Thanks for your pointers.

Had been considering a driver swap to a 1400mA driver. Though from a review by the infamous old4570 ;) had seen that a driver swap may not improve the performance (in terms of throw/high) by a significant amount. My unknown quality DMM (and skills!) have measured ~1.17A on a not fully fresh battery, and so I'm loathe to decrease the max current as the AK-47 has a regulated high of 1050mA, which the tests by brted bear out.

Seems like 1400mA drivers are rare as hens teeth unless you buy in bulk??? :(. I don't want/need 20, and the ones I had bookmarked previously are all 'not found'.

Anyways, as a noob, I guess driver replacement is a bit more than I'm game to go for at the moment without significant benefits on 'high'. Easier for a noob like me to buy some additional 18650s than consider driver replacement...

Hey! Stop laughing at me! And yes I have ordered a P60!! :P

Well i buy the 1050mA ones single mode in 5 pack and if need be i can cannibalize one for additional AMC7135 to make up to 1400mA.

The HS-801 is definitely single mode by driver. The tailcap switch resistor nonsense make it 2 mode. Don't know why would you want to have it 2 mode but hey, who em i to tell you what to do. However for close range a nice P60 XM-L based is more reasonable. I never found use for a dimmer mode on a purely thrower flashlight also a forward switch is also my preference for a single mode flashlight but those are hard to find.

i was looking for a hs-801 and found this one it looks diffrent and its a 5 mode

UniqueFire HS-801 R2 5-Mode Long-Range LED Flashlight (1*18650)

im thinking of buying it, to me it looks better then the kd one and it looks like you can take it apart, but it cost more.

but this one caught me eye

TrustFire - Extra Deep Reflector T6

this one has a Q5 emiter and the same deep relector as the HS-801 by the looks

TrustFire USA168 Q5 3-Mode Memory LED Flashlight (1*18650)

its $20.55 shipped

i was looking for the same but wanna try an xpg and xml. then remembered the te r2 at mf. takes p60 pill
