It seems a very nice led but never got any major attention (or maybe only i did not notice)

Excerpt:

- 140lm per watt.

- 3.0Vf

- Can be driven up to 1,5A

- 5000K color temp.

3*1,5=4,5W

4,5*140=630 lm

So.... why the heck we don't see those in flashlights?

Looks better than XM-L to me althrough those are two different beasts.

My guesses. Surface brightness which is what you need for throw. It is 3.5x3.5mm package instead of the 2x2 of the XM-L. Nichia LEDs tend not to be cheap either. I doubt it'll go as far as 630lm without massive heatsinks. BAsically I guess, it is too big and has different beam patterns from the Cree stuff the Chinese are mostly designing around. Might be nice in a floody light though.

I agree, very interesting! Problem is it's not released yet, Nichia says "under development".

- 140lm per watt. Yes, maybe at low currents.

I looked at the specs and 3.5x3.5 mm is the size of the base. The dome is 2.6 mm in diameter, so the die itself should be even smaller. Looks more and more interesting to me.

CPF discussion thread here

"The symmetrical package shape with a dome lens makes it perfect for secondary optical and mechanical designs."

Thats' just a fancy-shmancy way of saying it needs either a reflector or a TIR lens...
