Just for fun. Beamshots in heavy fog.

Glad my drive home from work this evening was only 3 miles - it was like trying to navigate inside a full milk carton.

The camera has cut through the fog far better than my eyes could.

So I took out some new lights for testing.

They are:

Tank007 TK-703 - Q3 emitter with an alkaline AAA

Akoray K-103 - Q4 emitter with a 10440

Aurora SH-033 - a nice stainless steel light with a Q5 emitter fed by an RCR2 battery

Aurora SH-034 - another nice stainless steel light with an R2 emitter driven by an RCR123

And yet another Aurora, the AK-P7 a single 18650 with an SSC P7 emitter. It is bigger than the other four put together.

Here goes:

Tank007 TK-703

Akoray K-103

Aurora SH-033 High

Aurora SH-033 Medium

Aurora SH-033 Low

Aurora SH-034 High

Aurora SH-034 Medium

Aurora SH-034 Low

Aurora AK-P7 High

Aurora AK-P7 Low

Awesome beamshots Don......has that effect that i posted earlier in the other thread. So do you really like the 034, since i plan on ordering it tomorrow right after work.

I do like it a lot. Hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

While the exposure and distances are the same as usual, the lights are being held two metres (6 feet) higher than usual and the atmospheric conditions are not normal. The camera saw far more than I could. so don't compare these to any other beamshots of mine - like the ones in snow they were for fun, not really useful for comparison beyond the ones done at the same time.

The Aurora SH-034 on low best conveys what my eyes were seeing as I took these.

But they were fun to do - hope you enjoy looking at them.

How well does it do with rcr's........does the light work well with primaries as well.

Thats one thing i like about this site.....pics are abundant.

It was an RCR in it when I took these shots. Not sure if I have an unused primary in the house. I have several part used or dead ones but I don't know if I have any unused ones at all. When I pull out the meters I'll check. Locally the cheapest CR123 primary is just under $10 so i don't use them at all. I have only two lights (out of more than 70) that need primaries but one of them needs 3 of them and runs just as well on a pair of 17500s and the other one lives in the car with a primary in it.

Found a primary that smells new - they have a distinctive smell.

Talking of which, the 34 is one of the nicest smelling flashlights I've had. It smells faintly of machine shops - not the nasty chemical smell that most Chinese products have.

Not having my meters with me I can't say - but it appears very, very dim on the random CR123 primary i just shoved into it. I mean incandescent Maglite Solitaire dim.

The cell smelled new but may well be near dead.

Ah! Found the box of fake Panasonics which i know to be unused - though they may be junk cells, they are fakes after all.

Now, if i could find where I put the light down...

Since I only have junk primaries I really can't say. Works well with theIMR cell I have in it. I've only once bought primaries - and they turned out to be fake Panasonics of very low quality. The primaries I have that it'll light up with, the resulting output might be a turn-on for a glow-worm but isn't all that useful. In the absence of known good cells though, i can't really say.

Yes they do seem to have a smell...lol...always wondered about that. Its not like im going to use primaries, mostly rcr's but just in case i need a primary i would also like for it to work as well.

Well i guess im just going to have to wait for mine to get here...lol. Thanks Don for checking .

I used to share a flat with a guy who loved the smell of Kodachrome film (Sadly no longer available - it was wonderful stuff). He could date the stuff by the smell of it. He got through a LOT of film. 6-10 rolls a day wasn't unusual.

I like the smell of CR123 primaries - just don't buy them.

Taking pics is easy. I've been doing that for more than 40 years - I'm 50 this year. Made my first print when I was 11. Spent much of the 70's and early 80's in darkrooms. '78-'84 my main source of income was printing pics for people.

However, making sense of what they are telling you is hard....

As is taking good pics.

As George Bernard Shaw wrote roughly a century ago, "Photographers are like sturgeon fish - 1,000,000 eggs for one good result."

Here's another stupid question. What do you mean by primaries?

Hi Don! That pic of the Aurora AK-P7 on High looks like the sun popping through the clouds. AWESOME!

Primaries are non rechargeables.......one time use only batts.

Oh ok, salamat pare.

But of course Pare.......try to stick with rechargeables, since i know that you have plenty.

Non-rechargeable cells.

A secondary cell is rechargeable, a primary one isn't. A cell is a single unit - what most people call a battery. Strictly speaking, a battery is a collection of cells - your car battery is made up of 6 lead-acid cells. An AAA alkaline is a single cell - a 9V battery is made from 6 1.5V cells

Thanks guys!

That just happened to be the most powerful light nearby. I own several lights more powerful than that. But in thick fog there is no point in playing with really high powered stuff. All you will see is the reflection of the beam.
