I’ve actually been pondering about this. Suppose your latest DX “PantsOnFire” battery from China blows up, won’t that take out your Pila IBC/Xtar SP2/Maha 777/$$$ charger as well?
I just got a SP2 on order myself, and the first thing that this is going to do when it arrives is to slow charge up some laptop salvaged 18650 cells that are slightly low on voltage. Not wanting to lose the charger if it blows up, I am actually planning to use a little wooden dummy cell with leads attached and running out to a separate cell holder.
Is this the best approach? Or is there a better way of doing things?
I would be more worried about other things than ruined charger if a battery would explode. But that’s just me. If you’re going with the dummy battery and leads, maybe you should also place the battery in a metallic jar or box or something?

Not really a good idea imo. Almost anything drops at large distances. Wooden dummy cell and leads are great, put the cell in a LiPo safety bag, place it on concrete without anything that can burn near it and you are fine.
Salesman: But if you really want to sleep easy at night I’d recommend sealing off every door and window with bullet-proof lucite.
Marge: Wouldn’t we all suffocate?
