Who is the winner in your eye in Olymic Games?

Meaning? Please do explain. This ought to be good.

What irritates me heavily around sports that it is given much more attention (media, financial etc) than it objectively deserves. In some countries more so than others. Also, what irritates me next about it, are totally stupid statements of people around sports (journalists, players themselves, coaches, audience). Sometime they talk about so simple things like they are, I dont know, important philosophical questions or something of outmost importance in our lives.

I mean, retirement system shattered, healthcare on low levels, education not good, children go to poor schools, older folk die in bad retirement homes without enough care, and there is more talk about sport than all of these areas together.
For me thats more than stupid.

You know what Im talking about. When technology in some laboratories becomes more advanced, we will be 100% percent sure

So your saying Phelps is a roid user.

That I highly doubt. And he has passed all test. Just like all the other folks from your country has done that didn’t win. LOL!

I hate a sore loser.

No, totally not, Im just saying that it can be suspicios to someone

I don’t see evidences that Phelps is taking any advantage, in fact I find sad he was punished for smoking like a monkey, as it does not improve at all how good he swims etc, only a bad example for kids, and it is up to him to smoke whatever he wants if it makes him happy

As someone said at work the other day, Phelps is so dang good that he can smoke dope and still win. Sad but true.

+1

Says the guy who was whining about an American suspecting a Chinese athlete was doping?

Now I’m starting to think you’re just trying to stir the pot here

I’m not a big Phelps fan, but look at the guy. He’s biologically designed for swimming. He has nearly the perfect attributes, which certainly gives him an advantage over most.

Not that I dislike Olympoics. I like to watch it, especially because there are sports on it which are usually not on TV.
Here in Europe usually everything is about football (soccer), in newspapers TV etc, and Im, personally, full of it.

I enjoy watching gymnastics for example, it can be really exciting. But as a person who often thinks, when watching a movie for example, hot it was made, and how “real” is it, during gymnastics program I also sometimes think about how these people came to that level of skill and was that process positive for them, in total, as human beings.

I wasnt too serious about Phelps (although someone can indeed be suspicious about his accomplishment  ), but also, on the other hand, ti should be noted that our oppinions are in some part or the other formed by how media are reporting about something.
And of course we in most of Europe (not to mention USA media) are totally under influence of anglosaxon media. Wich report of Phelps’ “unhuman” accomplishments and fast advancing as a product of his body characteristics etc, and when talking about Ye from some different angle.
In almost all other parts of the world (around 3 quarters of the world) they tend to report about same events, very often I think, from different angle etc, weather these parts of the world are “democratic” or “not democratic”. Democracy is also very relative thing, and also thing of perception as everything, and this perception is again under heavy influence of media…

Nevertheless I think China is indeed a winner  And I hope that theyll have twice as much medals than any next nation on next Olympics

They are all doped, no need to single individual athletes out. (at least after my definition) I only feel sorry for the ones that get caught .... and the other dopers are pointing fingers. But all that discussion will end, when genetic doping is mandatory to reach qualification requirements. Should be in the near future... or is it already here? Interdigital webbing on swimmers and high jumpers with wings... should be fun to watch. I'm pretty sure the next step in human evolution will be man-made in laboratories.

USA is on a roll and they will likely be the overall winners in gold, silver, and bronze, but personally I’m enjoying watching all of the winners. Talent is talent no matter which way you put it. Go USA, go Olympians!

Except when athletes diss their own country and represent another. That kind of taints the whole “national pride” aspect of cheering in the Olympics. It’s funny how many medals I’m watching being won by USA residents (some born here even) while competing for other countries.

So the winners, in my eyes, are the ones who are proud to represent the people they live and work with. The ones who appreciate and respect the spirit of these games. Of course, that’s secondary to their primary goal, which is to win a medal and glory for themselves

Thanks for all your replies, everyone has his answers,I agree one opinion that the one who attend the meeting is the winner, they are heros in my eye

I don’t find it that easy to determine what is each one representing, and why.

There are USA athletes that were born somewhere else, that might have been living in USA most of their lifes, and they might feel they belong to USA, or maybe where they were bornt, why not?

Others might not be proud of their country, it is not a must being proud of a country you might or might not like what is doing, Imagine any of them is being forced to do it, when he/she doesn’t want to.

First of all, they are persons, and then they represent themselves in the first place, and whatever they want in the second place I believe.

I am not a fun of having big convictions they only help to wars between countries and regions, cultures, religions…

Kobe Bryant. He gets to tap Stephanie Rice!

Nicely put yavi
Im somewhat anational. I have good feeling when someone from my country wins, but I dont give to much importance to that feeling (I dont build on it).
Also, somehow I always have tendency to cheer for weeker team or player :o

I dont like big phrases about Olympic spirit or something, it feels pretty empty. In my country some sport commentators (ordinary people and some journalists) even use words like “immortal” for some Olympic winners. Thats crazy :o
There are hosts of people, young and older, who know who won what in some sport tournament before 10-20 etc years, who was second, who made a goal etc, but didnt read maybe 3 “serious” books in their life :o Thats also crazy. Thats why they are able to seriously use word “immortal” so freele and without constrictions. SPort lingo is totally crazy, often it incorporates total nonsens, and people with all their seriousness speak or write that nonsens. For me, as I said, there is way too much importance and attention attributed to sports, relatively speaking. (its also funny, often they sey two or three sentences wich can be summed up as: “to win, we must not loose”, or something like that

Regarding spirit of the games, I dont know, maybe all is little hyped up in several ways, artificially. Commercialization, pure fact they happen only every 4 years. We misuse that word so much so that its now taken for granted.
I mean what spirit? Half of athlets act as if they would kill opponent for the medal ie for victory. What spirit is that, war spirit? Competition spirit? We dont have maybe more than enough of that in the world? On the other hand, yeah its nice to see someone happy after years of training and tribulations, after he or she won something, or because he is just happy he/she appeareed on Olympics. MAybe I already mentioned, I believe sport can be serious tool of self-actualization for some people, but thats it, everything on top of that is often superfluous.
And as yavi said, they are all persons, and they act (and think and feel) differently, we cant make generalizations.

I often notice how we are so into that sports propaganda that we are almost unable to see things without illusion, to see some reality. Are these Olympic winners so much “superhuman”, so big people, I dont know, heroes, to deserve so much pomp?? (or whats the right word) They are so above ordinary people? Workers, doctors, It doesnt matter.
Dond misunderstand me, Im far from being jelaous (god forbid), or something like that, but all that around sport is way to much for me. I think there are many, many (and many) more importatnt things wich are practically ignored in comparison how much media and public attention is given to sport.

Maybe its just like Old Romans said, Panem et circenses :o

Doubtful.

While your constant denigration of all things American may be fashionable in some circles, it’s not welcome here Gorann.

Did you really think nobody would notice that this account was made a week after your banning ?
