You say this now, but, magnetic ring control is awesome. You can select your output without even turning the light on, touch selection is so inferior to magnetic ring control it’s silly.
Thrunite makes a great product at a great price, the materials are awesome and did anyone mention 100k + lux from an XML?
200 bucks may not fall into most peoples idea of “budget” but compared to an olight SR series (which is about the only real competition for this thing) 200 bucks doesn’t look so bad anymore.
Update on long throw lights:
Ordered Wayne’s ST-90. Eagerly awaiting delivery.
Have a new Sky Ray STL V2. Somewhat inexpensive and has a wicked extra deep, smooth reflector. Exceeds the throw of my SR51 due to its pencil narrow beam.
If you think the stl v2 has a pencil thin beam check out a small aspheric or jacob a60. Most xmls have a lot of spill and arent really known to have pencil beams. Heard a lot of good things about waynes st90 though.
My 7g5v2 reflector is deeper than my stl v2, and has a slightly smaller/more concentrated hotspot. Im not sure about lumen output though.
Ok, if you are after a light with the most throw and don’t mind a pencil thin beam and coloured output, try these.
This single mode 638nm is so crazy tight that it throws the same distance and equal the greenie below. I was taken by surprised at first.
These 2 would out throw any of those 500mW 532nm (stock with no helping optics), 3W 445nm etc.
Just for fun….since they are not that expensive anyway. (but do be careful, read up on the safety aspect on laserpointerforums and there is a whole forum on the safety aspect, and responsible safe use only as these are not toys as they hang ard in the same league with the best short arcs in the hobby arena)
PS. The above greenie can easily be repaired if you happen to drop it and knock the pill containing the KTP crystal. I used the silicone thermal glue that i purchased on DX for 2 bucks. Just put it on, realign properly (roll the light around…you’ll get it). You could repair the thing if it comes with a crooked beam…heh. 5 mins job.
2100: Looks like fun to play with but (seriously), what do you do with a green laser after the initial thrill of planting dots on things is exhausted? A pointer in a class presentation doesn’t have to be anywhere as powerful or expensive/dangerous as this one. Since your link shows a price of $82, it is anything but an inexpensive impulse purchase. Thanks.
skytop - not sure if you ordered anything yet, but I just won an ebay bid on the Crelant 7G9 for $81, free US shipping. In my thread, EDCPlus responded and is offering the 7G9 for $80, free US shipping, +$15 for Int'l. I guess you could private message him for the deal. Reviews on the 7G9 are around and guys measured/calculated ~510 meter throw, manufacturer claims 700+. Reviews were positive except for lack of mode memory.
I think a throw like this, 3x18650's, very good heat mgt, quality made light, is a great deal for $80. I got a feeling they'll be coming out with a V2 or "CS" version in the next few months for this level of discount, but I'm sure for more $$$.
Also there has been a thread started on a TM31 clone (K40) coming out of China for between $100-120. The TM31 (and supposedly the clone) have a longer throw than the 7G9. But the clone doesn't seem real yet - do a search here on K40.
Tom: Thanks for the courtesy of the heads up. However, I have spent quite a sufficient amount on my little collection of flash lights. And there appears to be no end of future candidates!
I have the brutal ElectroLumens ST-90 coming which should satisfy my fever for a major throwing torch. The SR-91 and STL-V2 are my highly portable distance throwers which I thoroughly enjoy using. So I feel that I am set now. As you state, and with the 2012 Xmas season approaching, new models will be releasing shortly offering us even more eye candy to drool over.
