Review: Fandyfire Rook (Cree XM-L T6 | 3 x AA or 3 x 14500)

Nice review and the light looks great on first appearance. But I have to confess I’m rather confused at it’s intended use apart from a collectors piece.

A Mini Mag Pro puts out more lumens on 2AA and surely running 1x18650 would be more efficient than 3x14500’s?

I can see it’s good that it takes multiple battery types should the need arise (likely rare for most of use I’d have thought). And the bigger head should offer up better throw.

-undecided….

For the review. I'd wish it was a 4AA form factor, I'd be ordering... that's just me though as I hate getting odd number configs of alkaline cells or NmH cells....

Great review and thanks for taking the time. I’ve been looking at the version of this that uses cr123a batteries, but I can see getting my sons the AA version if they like the look of mine. My only disappointment in this whole thread/review, and it is very minor, is that I was hoping that MRsDNF’s request would have have produced a different someone. You are in a Scandinavian country, right? :stuck_out_tongue:

Yes, he is.... and so am I, you wanted to see me holding it naked?

Sorry don't have Rook, but here's next best thing.... Me holding TN31 naked

1. It is. I mostly listen Finnish metal (but which is song in English)

2. I press "quote", and copy text and go to my old message and do "edit" and paste text there

3. I thought this light is called Rook (FandyFire Rook to be exact)

4. Yes, that's me naked there... do not go look

I don’t know, maybe. If you are going to do it, let me know so I can get my wife over here because Vikings in their natural state always put her in the right frame of mind.

Four quick questions, the first three are for M3tal_Lord.

1. Is your username a music reference? If it is, my wife might be a little too interested. :stuck_out_tongue: JK! I hope!
2. How did you get my quote above the post it came from?
3. Could you please clarify “rook”?
4. Did any of y’all click on M3tal’s link? I’m too scared to do it now.

And the, sorry about going off topic.

2. You can edit posts... :P

4. Yes, I clicked it. Nothing to big. :P

Spoiler alert: M3TAL_L0RD is wearing a watch. ;)

Too funny. I forgot what we were talking about. I thought “rook” might have been Finnish slang for something else.

The, since I’m personally responsible for messing up a great review, I will try to make it up to you by giving away one of these lights when I hit 2000 posts. Totally serious. I am sorry because while everyone knows I don’t mind straying from the OP after a thread has started to come to a close, I feel really, really bad about doing it in something that like this review that I know took you lots of time, but perhaps worse yet, is “stickied”.

I will order one up this week so that it is available when the time comes.

I think someone just wants to play with the light. :D

Is there anyone who will be interested in the golden rook ?

I will be happy to accept any donation for this flashlight :stuck_out_tongue:
P.S. Nice review, thumbs up.

I really, really, REALLY hope I win this when the time comes. I never win any of these dang giveaways.

Three fully charged Eneloop drained to 0.8V after leaving it inside the ‘Rook’ for just 2 weeks without using it (I was away for 2 weeks).

Since the ‘Rook’ cannot be locked out, I place a piece of round thin cardboard between the battery and the head unit to lock it out. Troublesome when come to use the light which need to remove the cardboard first before it can be used.

Btw, this light can run on 1 battery.

Thanks for the review! Great light, but I really dislike the colour. I will wait for the black version to come out (or for the zebralight q50, if they ever release it)

A few weeks back, I sent the follow email to BlackShadow Technology:

Why not black?

The Sky Ray King is, and always has been, a popular light. However, a very significant percentage of owners (including myself) don't really like the colour that much, and aren't too enthusiastic about adding new lights to our collection in the same colour. There will always be those who like gold/sand of course, but why not make some of your new lights in black too? Everyone likes black. You can't go wrong with it. I would have bought a Rook by now if it wasn't for the colour, and I know for a fact that I'm not the only one. Just some constructive feedback from a potential customer. I hope you will consider it. Thanks for reading :)

This was their reply:

Thanks for all of your attentions and support of our flashlight, we really appreciate it. Regarding the black type flashlight, thanks for your advice, I will send it to our engineers, we did have some customers who want black color before. We totally know black is the mainstream, but what we want is difference, we hope you can recognize us at first sight.

Yours sincerely,

Helen

The part where I said I would have bought one by now if it was black was before I learned about the dismal AA performance. But it's probably still true.

I’m not seeing me ever owning a gold light, end of story…

It’s been ordered, so you will only have to endure approximately 550 more idiotic posts from me to get another crack at a win.

What's the brightness like compared to the Balder SE1 XM-L on Eneloop or similar batteries?

Ceiling bounce is 135% of my Balder SE-1 XM-L NW.
