Daylight visible bicycle light

The county that I live in has the 2nd highest average age in the united states. So it is a bit dangerous to ride my bicycle around and being visible is very important, even during the day.

I have a NF-500 type apsherical light I got from ebay for 13 dollars from a US seller. I removed the lens part and use it as pictured on my bicycle. I use the strobe during the day which is visible to motorists even in direct sunlight. It has about a 100* field of view. It pulls .8 amps on the multimeter on strobe with a full charge and .4a at 3.85v.

As soon as my thermal adhesive arrives I am modding the pill with a brass slug so I can use my xm-l emitter that will be flush with the front for a 180 degree+ field of view

I am looking for a driver that will power an emitter at 2+ amps on strobe. I have just received the 8* 7135 from KD , does this drive at full power on strobe?

The flash on the light is pretty fast, about 15hz or so. Ideally I want a driver that will give ~6-7hz and possibly a slower mode as well, but at 1.4a+ of regulated power. Maybe a 4+ 7135 would be a better choice with an R5 that I have on the way. The reason I don't put the head on is visibility. When I mod it it will be visibible from over 180 degrees which is important to me. I have this driver on the way that has 3 groups of modes, should be here in less than a week. I personally find strobe modes invaluable for biking but it seems like the mode is shunned by most people where they dont post amp readings for strobe modes, etc. Maybe I should buy that driver programmer thing and make my own modes (its a huge thread, it would be nice to have a current summary of it lol)

When I got into flashlights I couldn't wait for the DX month long wait so I went to ebay and searched for cree flashlight and clicked on the "US Only" filter on the left hand side. The seller does ship from texas and his service was outstanding. The tailcap had a problem with it and before I figured out that I could fix it myself I emailed him and told him that it was faulty and 3 days later a whole new flashlight set showed up at my door...no questions asked! The bike mount that it comes with is good and allows for a quick release, let me know if you want some pics of my setup. I would be interested to see your setup triker :-).

Triker: Different driver, here is mine

That setup would cause problems with the the cops here. That said, I'd far rather take my chances with the cops than other road users. The law doesn't go in for not seeing you and trying to crush you with their vehicles.

Can't say about that driver, but every meter reading I've taken on strobe on every light (except those with deliberate reduced power strobes) has the strobe using full current. Beware of 5-12Hz strobes - they can induce seizures in susceptible individuals and aren't allowed on our roads for that reason.

What is the best way to get a couple of 7135 chips, just buying a driver and harvesting them off of it?

Very cool I never noticed that graph! I guess that light distribution is the result of the plastic dome directly on top of the emitter? I took one off and put epoxy over it to seal it up and after 5 mins of runtime something happened and I now have a very warm yellow/brown Q5, but it still works!

Someone here mentioned they might try grinding down the dome flat with a dremel or something and then polish it up and clear coat it. I wonder what effect that would have on off center visibilty.

Putting a sheet of diffuser over it would probably increase visiblity-emmition area is key.
