I said I was going to build 12 Maglites for the Holidays. Well, I decided to make sort of a reality build, with a time limit and time frame, blow by blow. I am going to mod 12 of the 2AA Mini Maglites. Two of each color (Black, Red, Blue, Green, Grey and Camo). All of them will have copper heat sinks and will be Direct Drive with Nichia 219 leds from IS. The Nichias will be reflowed onto 14mm Cree XP-G stars. The optics will all be TIR and vary from 15 degree to 45 degree. There …

Converting hollow SA-305 pill to p60 pill
Some pics of a hurried upgrade to the SAiK SA-305 3*AA torch that I got the other day.

First a few words about this light in stock form. Simply put it's a great form actor. Build wise the machining and anno is decent but the 3*AA battery carrier, pill, driver, emitter, and lens all suck.
Battery Carrier: Sucks because the springs are too soft in it and don't hold the AA cells tight enough. They bounce in the carrier and can cause the light to change modes when set down …

Some good stuff here on making MicroMags
Meet my newest creation...
My Micro "Mac"-light, a single 14500 driven minimag based on Match's simple emitter mod with a shortened battery tube to avoid using a dummy battery and to make a truly pocketable Maglite at only 3.6" (91.4mm) long.
This baby is driven by a 3500mA 5-mode driver putting current to a T6-1A emitter and out of a Carclo TIR lens. Since this is just my first quick prototype, it is running out of a standard P60 pill but is fully heatsinked with arctic silver, tight…

Nice one guys, this is what I need, dragging my feet but if I give it a week, get as much in as possible, then I’ll start editing to group everything.
Anything you post, please add a small description and credit the author or yourself, since I work purely off my phone, it’ll save me a bit of a ball ache sorting things out, particularly if I can just copy and paste text under a header. Also, suggestions for headers and links to cell/battery reviews might be an idea. I guess I’m pushing it, but I’m thinking this could provide a great resource for both noobs and seasoned modders - I’m picking up a lot of info just from reading back into the older threads. I’m also going to find some of jack the clippers threads on lanyards and light customizing. Again because they provide a good start for playing about.

I just put together my new light using KD’s 8x7135 driver. It appears I only have HI mode. I remember someone else having this problem but don’t quite remember what the fix was. Any help guys?

ULTRAFIRE HD2010 from Tmart
[image]
Purchase price $37 $34 with free shipping (after $8 discount coupon). Normally $45 $42 (price drop).
EDIT 5/19: After working with Louis, I suggested he reinstate the discount coupon since many more members wanted this light but the original coupon expired. Well I just got notice from him that they lowered the normal price to $42 and have reinstated the original coupon good for 30 more buyers. So, here you go! $34 after coupon shipped from US to the next …

So I have seen this drop-in set fro $3, seems like a good deal.
Then I would need some XM-L's on stars and a driver, is that all? Oh and some thermal paste.. Am I missing anything else?
I'd like to have a go at making a small batch of 3 mode drop-ins, maybe 10 or so. But I don't really know where to start.
What size board that the emitter is on will I need to fit properly? And where would I look for 3.5-4.2v 3 mode drivers?

*Smart Alec Mode On*
Afaik you don't need a still to mod maglites. OL may know. ;)
*Smart Alec Mode Off*
If you're thinking of Jayrob then I think he is. I would just PM him over on CPF.

This is going to be a quick guide on the "paperclip" trick which is used to test whether the problem with a flashlight is in the electronics or a connection issue.
So first you remove the tailcap from the light. If the body is one piece scroll down a bit more.
Then you take a piece of wire or anything conductive. In the past I have done this with a knife blade, a paperclip (hence the name), or even a fork.
If the light turns on then it is simply a connection issue or a sw…
Scaru’s guide to testing/eliminating tailcap issues on most encountered light forms.
Note:- by putting your red meter lead into the 10a slot on your digital multimeter and setting to 10a dc, you can read tail cap current the same way.

Ok, I’ve been procrastinating about this for too long, so with a short day at work and an empty house, I decided to get on it.
I fitted this driver
And a u3 1c emitter from intl outdoor, the driver was out of stock last time I looked, but they are supposed to be getting more, might be time for an email bombardment as these drivers rock! 8)
First strip the light down and get the pill out.
