Another source, haven't used them before. http://el-top.com/product/compact-searchlight-nitecore-ea4-explorer-series-pioneer-860lm

This has a closeup of the tailcap locking mechanism:

The more I read about this light at Nitecore webpage, the more I want one :D!
And now when you look at it as “search” light then modes start to make sense, they are there for some throw and not for some sub-lumen firefly modes, even tho one or two extra low modes would be great, lets say <3lm and ~10lm, yes?
And I do hope this will have some throw :D!

BTW, That Ebay seller and that online retailer el-top.com seem to be the same seller

Ouchy - el-tom.com linked to above has NW version available and free shipping.

Why AA search light? Surely you don’t want to give up on the search after this runs out of juice after a few min on turbo?

The concept here is very good (better than the Rook) and they’ll sell a bunch, but srsly wtf on 5 modes that space out same as 2 mode lights.

The price per lumen is indeed the best. The previous top performer of 4xAA catergory - Sunwayman M40A with 645 lumen (600 lumen old version) is still at around US$100

The quoted runtime at 860 lumens is 1hour 45 minutes, that got to be a serious search.
Also I realized a good (or not so bad) point about the step down: after 3 minutes, you can just half press+hold the switch and it’s back to 860 lumens

Lumen per battery and battery life per lumen seems to be decent too, especially if it turns out to be good thrower with some usable flood

I’m waiting to hear back from my guy. His prices are usually the best, and he has always given me dependable service. I like to be loyal to a good provider, but, if I have to wait, I’ll get it elsewhere. Bookmarking el-top.com though.

Why don’t you give us his store / eBay name. This is not bloody CPF :money_mouth_face:

Doing Outdoor. http://stores.ebay.com/DOING-Outdoor-Appliance/Flashlight-/\_i.html?\_fsub=2257339013&\_sid=977463853&\_trksid=p4634.c0.m322

I very much doubt the alkalines they’re showing in their adverts can push 2A or so for anywhere near that. 20min max if you’re lucky.

I checked el-top and could only see XM-L U2. I have a funny feeling the NW isn’t going to straggle into the retail scene right off the bat.

It says their ANSI tests were performed with 1.2v AA. Which means NiHm.

Even with nihm that’s assuming it steps down quickly from turbo. So it’s basically the high mode runtime.
Rudimentary calc for high assuming that’s accurate:

2.4*4*1.2*0.85/5watts
Ans = 1.9584

So ~1.5-2A to emitter on high.

Brilliant design. Moronic modes. What a shame.

Yup. No nw actually for sale, but mentioned in the nitecore pics.

Do you guys think this will have usable spill like the jetbeam pa40?

It’s an XM-L. It should have lots. From the beam shots, it looks like that’s what it does best.

Thanks, was hoping so. Just what the doctor ordered

+1. If the modes had been better spaced you’d only need 3 modes - or 4 at most.
Everything else about it looks so good :stuck_out_tongue:
